Tool “OpenFileTC” : What about ?

Post by *Clo »

:) Hello All !

• This tool is available on THIS PAGE @ Totalcmd.net.

- I didn't search here before, sorry if this has been discussed already, I write here about the last 1.4 version.

:D I gave it a try, it seems interesting, since you are not bound to choose an appropriate editor for F4 at each edition, that is nice… However, with such a big tool, I would expect a feature able to parse the headers of the *.TXT to see if it's an Unicode or ANSI file, then open it in the appropriate editor, since many ones don't support Unicode yet… *Plop !*

:( Unfortunately, there are also some very annoying bugs, especially when translating the LNG i.e. in French (and certainly in a lot of other languages using accented characters - upper ANSI ones and umlauts…).
- In some locations, there are Russian characters instead, that is very boring, like one can see ON THIS CAPTURE showing the "Edit associations…" dialogue in French.
- I guess that the Author might give a glance HERE
- In the settings page, the list of the colours to choose is not translated. It could either invoke the Win one according to the Win language in the PC… or simply have strings to translate in the LNG, not a big deal to add, finally.
- Moreover, the programme seems oversized with regard to the supported functions : OpenFileTC.exe = 809.5 KiB, really fatty, though not UPX-packed… I don't know what is so big inside, maybe a lot of anti-edit¦hack stuff, that I think is quite stupid for a freeware soft…

- I'll let you off the used English language, really hard to translate properly from “that”…:|
- In the LNG, the new-line mark (wrapping) appears here as a #135 character “ ”, that looks strange, while the usual mark is “\n” or sometimes “ #10#13 ” or so… It works, though.
• Despite these snags, Paul Vansumsen-friend and I have translated as well as possible the LNG, and it's below as MIME :

Code: Select all

MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name="Language.rar"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="Language.rar"

Concerning the #135 character (‡): in 1.4 it's now possible to use comma (,) instead, just replace all #135 characters with comma in the INI file with any text editor. ;)

Concerning the size: it was discussed with the author on the Russian forum (forum.wincmd.ru), and he explained that the program is written in Delphi7 - that's why the program has so large size. He has no plans on making it smaller, 'cause time of starting the program depends little of the file size.

BTW, packing such a tool with UPX is a bad idea. When starting several instances of a usual program, Windows does not copy it's program code in the memory (as it cannot be changed - so why to keep absolutely exact copies of memory?). But when a program is packed with UPX, it needs to be unpacked before running. So it changes its own program code, and Windows cannot predict that the result will be the same, so it has to make a copy of the program's binary code for every instance started. This can be not a problem for programs that are running in a single instance only (e.g., Media Player or Winamp). But OFTC can be run (and it is usually run!) in several instances, so packing it with UPX will save some space on hard drive, but will produce much larger RAM space waste (which is more critical I suppose :) ).

mistook ?

Post by *Clo »

:) Hello Captain!

- I guess you mistook : #135 ‡ is used in the language-files as the wrapping mark, nothing in the INI allows to change that mark; the commas are allowed now to separate the extensions in the INI file itself, and I don't see how you could use that character in text files while they may contain already a lot of natural commas…
…he explained that the program is written in Delphi7 - that's why the program has so large size. …
- I know that there is (by default) a lot of quasi-useless bitmaps almost never used which blow up the EXE… I suppose that a good part could be removed, just a handful among them are visible using the soft… But I'm not sure that the bitmaps be the only reason for such a fat… ;)
- I would bet that Ch. Ghisler has fired the most bitmaps he could from TC ! :P
BTW, packing such a tool with UPX is a bad idea.
- I didn't advise to UPX-pack the EXE, I just noticed it is not…

• BTW : The Help folder is built, just some controls and the Author's permission to release it are missing… 8)

• Thank you for the reply,

 Kind regards,
Claude

Ah, sorry, I read your post without proper attention. :) The thing is that this character was used as the extensions separator in the previous versions of the program (and there was a discussion about it on the same Russian forum), that's why I thought you are talking about the same. :)
I didn't advise to UPX-pack the EXE, I just noticed it is not…
And I just explained why it is not. :D

Hello :) I didn't know about this topic, sorry for silence

Very glad that my program becomes famous. Very thans to Flint for supporting! He told me about this topic.

2Clo:
I'll try to answer on some your questions and remarks. Sorry for bad english, I can't speak English well :)

1) Version 1.5 will have an Unicode-supporting. I will convert English and Russian into Unicode format, and ask all other people to convert their files too.
2) I've forgot that some symbols may be absent in another languages. It's my mistake :)
3) Programm will grows more. I don't want to make its weight less. Because its weight doesn't have an influence on the productivity. May be program will eat not 4 Mb memory but 5 Mb memory, but I think its not so important. Or I wrong? :)
4) Also I wll replace ‡ sumbol into another, for example sumbol | or /s. Or include supporting both ‡ and another two. Its not so hard.
5) Any language which you will create you can send me by mail: antoon_inc@mail15.com. More info about language files and help files you can read at this page:
http://dbcd.narod.ru/openfiletc_en.html

Thank you for supporting! Best regards, Anton Isaev aka Yams

:) Hello, welcome aboard !

• Glad to see you here, finally.
…4) Also I wll replace ‡ symbol into another, for example symbol | or /s. …
- The usual ones are \n, all translators know…
…5) Any language which you will create you can send me by mail: antoon_inc@ATmail15DOTcom. …
I've already sent you the French LNG and the small Help folder we made to this address on March, 02… Is it lost ?
- For French speaking users, the LNG is above in that thread encoded as MIME, they are in the habit to recover such files ;)
- May we distribute the Help folder ? It's so small, no problem to host it and set links for the TC users…

 Kind regards,
Claude

I didn't receive any letter with French language on my e-mail :( May be it was losted? Send it one more time please, if you can.

Yes, of course! :P I will be very glad to see French language in the list of all languages! If you want, I can put language files at my server and update OpenFileTC Html-file. Address of this Html-file I wrote in the previous post.
Also I can send all needed files for .chm-file, if you want to make French .chm-file.

Best regards, Anton.

This program has one anoying bug:

When I say "use everytime" checkbox it doesn't - it will ask me again for that extension.

+ it doesn't use programs from system like "open with" dialog box....

You are right but try to check "use everytime" before choising the program...
Here it works !

- Just copy and decode as usual… Please, notice that the French flag icon is not included here, you might have it already from the previous version…
- Copiez et collez en texte, décodez et décompressez le RAR obtenu dans le sous-dossier “Language”. Le nouveau fichier est en UNICODE ! Veuillez noter qu'il faut conserver l'icône FR existante.

• Like I said in my email, the internal font is still MS Sans Serif, and this could be changed : @ some locations, it causes problems…

- Thanks for that update, we will try to update the Help folder a.s.a.p.…

 Kind regards,
Claude,
Clo
