[Req] Use new icon in self extracting archive

Post by *Samuel »

The old TC icon is still used for the self extracting archives. Either you should use the new one or create one with an additional box as pack symbol like the TC admin icon.

Also the favicon from the Website and the forum should be changed.

Indeed it's used to keep the self-extractor as small as possible. It's a 16 color icon, which takes considerably less space than a 256 color or even true color icon.

@Samuel:
You can load the SFXHEAD.SFX in Resource Hacker and replace the icon.

I have made a version which has only the good 8-bit-coloured icons 16², 32² and 48²:
http://icfu.totalcmd.net/TC/Tools/SFXHEAD.ZIP

Attention, it has 7 kB more, it will easily hit the limit of your ISP, stick, hard disk, etc...! ;)

Design decisions which prefer a crappy look over a few kB of space are hard to understand in these times...

If you prefer a small target Exe, just UPX the SFX, it will shrink by ~40 kB.

Thanks icfu

I would vote for the space wasting "SFXHEAD.SFX" from icfu to be included in future TC versions.
It could be offered to download the old one separately. For Space Junkies :-)

Perhaps this should be the general solution for such things:
  • - by default use a new approach (even if it would be slow on old computers or is such "space consuming" like in this example)
    - give a workaround in the forum for slow computers or little space improvements
Don't understand me wrong: I'm against bloating TC, but today there is more than saving bits.

Just most people have big and fast computers so only people with slow computers have to look for workarounds.

Hello, Samuel. Hello, icfu.

We had this same discussion in the beta forum as well ...
(My lawyer told me not to reveal any details on the outcome of the discussion. ;-) )

I tihink it is time to revisit the SFX icon, and maybe to add the option to change the icon to some custom icon while creating sfx archive?

The sfx file u create is an exe-file where the zip-files is attached to so with some coding experience you can write urself such a header or check totalcmd.net for other sfx-headers.

..yeah, and with some more coding experience I could write my own unpacking routine. But since I don't have any coding experience except those form C64 BASIC, I am putting out suggestion to implement simple icon exchanger, like WinRAR has (for example), when creating SFX ZIP files. Of course I can change it later with ResHacker, but it would be much more convenient if it could be made during packing.
