Background Transfer: Always start paused?
So here we are again... Is there a known way the have the BTM hold copying/moving until started?
So at the first opening of the dialog it would be in paused mode and after copying is done it would go back to paused?

Only by opening the transfer manager manually via menu or the command cm_OpenTransferManager (e.g. defined for a hotkey). It will then start empty, and only start copying when you add files to it (F5 - F2).

Hey, my question was actually the opposite. I would like for it to remain on pause until I manually start it. As soon as the queue is empty it would go back to paused. But I assume that's not possible?
I have a very slow samba server and often need to copy stuff to it. The problem is: as soon as you start copying it is nearly impossible to browse the folders. So it would be awesome if TC just let me throw everything in the queue and when I'm done start copying.
Of course I could manually pause it first but since I'm kinda lazy I'd thought to ask first

No, but you can set a speed limit, which should be remembered.is it possible to start BGM paused in new versions of TC
What exactly are you trying to do? I cannot reproduce this problem.since TC is unresponsive while there is a background transfer in progress

Here's the problem I'm having: if I start copying files from the network share and at the same time continue browsing through this share's folders, TC gets very slow (even to a point of "not responding"). Maybe it's caused by antivirus checking the files in the queue.
So what I do right now is switch to BGM and press pause until I'm done with adding files to the queue. Then I start BGM and refrain from browsing until the transfer is finished.

Does it help to set a speed limit instead of using "pause"?

I can confirm this, it's especially noticeable if you have a slow WAN link between sites (too big chunks of data being read/written?). A feature like the one requested by the OP would be really helpful.
An alternative would be to somehow detect the link speed and automatically decrease the buffer size when a slow link is detected (Windows detects the link speed somehow, but I don't know if that API is available to applications as well)

Strange, the latest version of TC pauses the background temporarily while reading a foreground directory. In my tests, I can now change directories just fine. But my network connections aren't that slow...

That's true, the situation has vastly improved in the latest versions of TC, it used to be much worse, but its possible my connection is also slowed down by antivirus checks. I've noticed more slowdowns on installer files, which contain more files inside them, so antivirus has to unpack them and then check for viruses.

What helps a lot is to turn off per file icons on network drives:
Configuration - Options - Icons - Not on net
Because when TC has to load an icon from an EXE file, the virus scanner will kick in, and scan the entire file.
