Wrong Icon for pdf files

Post by *loadspeaker200w »

I don't know if this is a bug, OS problem or some unknown behavior,
but TC (7.5 pb4) is showing 'exe' icon instead of usual 'adobe's pdf' icon. Windows explorer (I'm using Windows 7) shows the correct icon.
Any suggestions?

Check if you have erroneous internal association entries in TC configuration.
You can also try to start TC with empty ini. Type YourPathtoTC\totalcmd.exe /i=empty.ini in command line.

No, it didn't work.
I also tried deleting windows icon cache (Appdata\local\iconcache.db), without success.

I think I found it:
In TC->File>Associate with menu (Original TC menus of course :) ) I changed pdf associated exe and displayed icon from Foxit Reader (which I moved earlier to another place) to Adobe Reader.

This is happened (or what I think):
1. I installed a clean version of windows 7.
2. I used Foxit Reader, as it was present in my portable application set, to view some PDFs. I can't remember if TC showed Foxit Icon for PDFs or not.
3. I Installed Adobe acrobat. As a result both TC and windows showed Adobe Icon for PDFs.
4. I was happy with it for a while
5. I moved Foxit's executable from "e:\Protable\Foxit" to "e:\Programs\Foxit". Nothing Happened immediately.
6. Later I restarted the whole system, and thus restarted TC. It showed the wrong icon. (no icon = executable without icon's icon :P )
7. After much searching, I used "Associate with" command to change Foxit to Adobe (both exe path and icon)

I think it might be a problem with the way good ol' TC and the new Windows handle file associations.
Any comments?

Exactly -TC doesn't support all types of Windows associations and will probably never do.
Any comments?
Use internal associations.

This can happen when there are multiple contradicting associations (windows offers about half a dozen ways to associate), or one of them points to nowhere (file removed).

If you are really interested in finding the reason, and haven't changed everything already, I can send you some instructions on where to look with Regedit to find the problem.

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.

I'm having the same problem... PDF files don't show the proper icon. But I never used any other PDF-viewer but Adobe Reader. I've tried reinstalling Adobe Reader and even started TC with a clean .ini.

No dice. :? In Explorer the icons display properly. This Windows installation is only a few days old...

I'm using Windows 7 x64 with the latest TC (7.50). I could do with some directions on where to look... :D I'd really like to get to the bottom of this.

Old story---

:) Hello !

• That's an oooooold story, I had this in very old TC versions (4…5…) using Adobe Acrobat…
- I fired it for a while and use Foxit PDF Reader instead, it does the trick.
I've not any problem with the file type icon in the TC lists…
- But to complicate the issue :
¤ Watching in the Foxit resources, suprisingly I found… an Adobe icon (Icon 12 - Icon Group 255) ! :P
