How to sort thumbs by custom column?

Post by *JohnFredC »

I searched the forum but found no relevant topics:

In "full" panel mode one can select a custom columns config and sort the file list by any custom column (such as the X dimension of an image file) by clicking in that column's header.

However, when switching to thumbnail view, the custom column mode reverts to the TC default "Full" mode columns AND the selected sorting order reverts to "ascending name".

Two questions:

1. Is it possible to preserve the "Full" mode sorting order (selected by the user) when switching to thumbnail view?

2. How does one sort the thumbs panel by a custom column?

Sorry, you can't. It's on my wish list, but I don't really now how to present it in a user-friendly way...

Wouldn't defining CustomColumnType work?

Type: DetailsMode
Type: ListMode
Type: ThumbnailMode

Then you can make whatever customColumn you like and choose which mode it should be displayed as.
Which could just be a couple checkboxes on the edit customColumn screen.

TC is the only commander software I know of that preserves column headers when displaying a file panel of thumbs... a very convenient UI feature for sorting thumbs and a real advantage to using TC in thumbs mode.

IMO the logical approach to a thumbs sorting UI in TC would be to preserve 1) the user's selected custom column mode and 2) sorting sequence when switching between Full and Thumbs modes.

Most users would expect that behavior by default. No additional screen real-estate would be required, either.

I agree - nice and simple!

1) the user's selected custom column mode and 2) sorting sequence when switching between Full and Thumbs modes.
This would be a step forward but I'm not sure it would solve the whole problem. How can I change the columns when inside thumbnail view? Choose another custom column view and then go back to thumbnail view? Really?

I think it would be betterl to apply the following changes:
1. There would be view modes like full, brief, thumbnail and so on but no distinct custom column views.
2. A way to change the currently displayed columns but not the view. This would reuse the columns currently defined as custom column views.
3. Introduce a default column config which contains the columns defined in fill view by default.

Right-click on the column headers as usual...?

That currently changes to a custom column view.

Correct, but that could be changed so that custom column views as we know them are only shown when Full view is chosen.

In the other views: Brief, Thumbnail and maybe even Comments - selecting a custom view should only change the column headers to those of the custom view, for sorting purposes.

@Lefteous, isn't that what I said? Defining ViewModes/Types?
So any CustomColumn can be used with Brief/Details/Thumbs/etc...

Sounds similar to what I suggested.

I adamantly wouldn't want that! It's bad enough that we lose the custom columns when switching to thumbs.

If the visibility and behavior of custom column headers persisted in thumbs mode, then for my purposes, the problem would be solved...

Read again (further on in my posting) - that is exactly what I suggest.

Me too - that is not necessary - just choose custom view when in thumbs view and the headers should change to the custom view headers - no need for checkboxes for that.
