When searching for text inside files, I have to check the "Unicode" checkbox, otherwise the search won't file the text in unicode files.
For example:
When I search for text in Windows registry (.reg) files, the default search doesn't find anything! I have to enable Unicode to find the text.
This behavior is fundamentally broken. Users don't know anything about the encoding of their files. They just want search to work.
P.S. Explorer finds unicode files automatically.
[Text Search] Recognize unicode files

Hi, compie.
Your complaint is absolutely valid. The default text search should take Unicode into consideration. The user should not have to tick a check box for it.
I assume your complaint has not received too much feedback, because it is a known deficiency of Total Commander that it supports Unicode only half-heartedly. This deficiency has been discussed extensively in several threads in the past.
Total Commander v7.5 will introduce full Unicode support at last.
Kind regards,
Karl

I must say that Explorer is also not so good as you think. If you have Unicode file w/o BOM (byte order mark), Explorer won't find text in this file. You may try to create 3 files with same text - plain.txt, uni.txt and uni_bom.txt - first in ANSI, second and last in Unicode but with and w/o BOM. Then start search entered text using Explorer and TC (both with and w/o Unicode checkbox). Explorer won't find file uni.txt at all but TC will find it with Unicode checkbox.
So it is great that TC allows to specify what to search - Unicode or plain text.
But it would be great if Unicode checkbox has third state (filled out) to search both Unicode and non-Unicode string - i.e. to search two strings simultaneously.
