Downloading the last version of TC, I found that the command ALT+F10 was changed. After press the buttons the re-scan automatically starts without the need to press F2 "to re-scan tree". The new feature is troublesome because it requires pressing ESC to allow a quick writing of the searched directory.

I don't know whether it is a bug or it was made intentionally. As a suggestion I propose to stop the automatic re-scan and let the F2 button for any requested re-scan.

Please check if your have enough rights to create tree files (by default in root folders of drives, but you may redefine path in TreeFileLocation parameter of wincmd.ini, [Configuration] section). It seems that if TC can't find tree file, it starts scanning automatically.

Thank you very much for the hint. I understand what happened. Actually I am not able to copy a file to the root c:\ in my new PC due to some restriction. I am not an expert on PC so I prefer to let this restriction.
You suggested to re-configure the configuration setting of TC, but I was not able to find the right setting among the various options and the file wincmd.ini is totally puzzling for me. May you help me?

Get the TC Ultra Editors from
http://sites.google.com/site/ultratceditors/ultra_tc_editors
and start the Configuration Editor wich is imho the best tool
to change TC settings as every setting possible is explained.

If you don't have TreeFileLocation key in [Configuration] section of wincmd.ini, you may add it manually.

This one I'm using:

TreeFileLocation=%$LOCAL_APPDATA%\GHISLER\tree_%D%.wc

So TC keeps tree files in single folder with names like tree_C.wc, tree_D.wc etc.

If your PC is running Windows Vista or Windows Seven, the root of the C: drive (or whatever your operating system drive is) is a protected location, and you need admin rights to be able to save any files to that location. If you right click TC and 'run as administrator' and then Alt+F10, the tree file should be created in the root of the drive. The problem is, anytime you then want to update it, you need to run TC as admin again. Running as a normal user will not allow the file to update, even when it already exists in the root of the drive.

But you may open file's properties and give full access rights for all users.
But I prefer to collect all tree files in single folder anyway.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I prefer to modify the wincmd.ini and now it is ok. I wonder if it is the case to modifying permanently the setting standard when TC has been downloaded, because W_Vista or W_7 don't allow using the root c:\.

I understand your querying TC's use of the root directory, andreop.
I long argued to Ghisler (author) that TC's use of restricted locations is anachronistic and a threat to security, particularly the use of these places by default.
The root directory for treeinfo.wc, \totalcmd for installation (off root, lower case, abbreviated...), others..
We're looking very pre-millennial.
