For what are you use Total Commander?

Post by *Rocky III »

Today i update in the latest ver of TC v 7.65a. Then i spent a time to search over a forum, read about plug-ins,... TC has many plug-ins and pack editions. How i see i do not have idea for what i can use TC. There are many accessories and i do not know for them and for what to use it. I use only to copy/paste, delete, organize files on HDDs, i use very often tabs,... Only stuff which i can use over Win explorer but it is much easier from TC. I think i am not the only one who use TC in this way. But i would like to improve possibilities usage of TC and to learn something new because i think i only use 15-20% potential of TC.

Could you give me a few tips and idea for what are you use TC? What plug ins are very useful, for what are good those pack editions etc?

Well, I use TC primarily for all my file managing. Copy, move and so is of course the first steps. Then you have all the splendid tools like compare contents, multi-rename tool and synchronize directories to name a few. TC comes with a really good Help file. There you can s learn what all the tools are capable of and probably you'll find smthng you need or realize that you can do specific tasks with automated functions.

Multi-rename tool has a LOT to teach you and I'd say that is the tool I use the most compared to the others.. I use IrfanView and WinRar with TC but hardly any plugins.. I only have fileinfo and dirsizecalc plugins.. I'm sure you'll get a lot more tips from the gurus inside here also.
Total Commander and Gaming. Only reasons left to use Windows.

I work in IT doing analysis and programming. I use TC frequently, every day, for file management and many other things. I do a lot of comparing of files and directories, and TC provides excellent tools for that. I've recently learned how to use the multi-rename tool, and that's useful. I use the FTP client quite often. I use the configurable Start Menu and Directory Menus a lot - for changing to frequently-used folders, running scripts, etc. I make use of the button menu for frequently-used programs. I've configured buttons in the button bar to run ExamDiff for comparing files, with a couple of different sets of options. I've configured many other buttons for frequently-used programs. I use the ZIP tool frequently.

TC brings together all of my frequently used utilities and programs in the most useful way imaginable. It's what the operating system should do, but doesn't. Example, how would you compare two folders in Windows Explorer? I can't think of how that could be done. In TC, it's easy, I just use the Synchronize tool. Maybe there's a way to do it using Windows Explorer, but it would not be as easy and simple as TC's way.

As one of my co-workers put it, I 'live' in TC most of the day. When I sometimes have to use a computer that doesn't have TC installed, I feel disabled.

What you expect from TC?
It doesn't make pizza... unfortunately. :P

Seriously, you can do as you can imagine.
Just ask (here) what you want to do.
My Best Wishes,

Initially I bought the program for its lap-link cable ability and didn’t venture into the finer program workings.

About three years ago I started to get serious about using the program and mainly use it for student file management.

I scan work folders for complete work, put the data into the multi-rename tool, and then into an Excel pivot table to reveal the required results. This process only takes five minutes to complete and it tells me who is deficient on work and when it was completed.

A few weeks ago, one of the students who has done very little all year, placed lots of work in his folder, claiming it was on his USB drive. I did a checksum search, put it into Excel and it revealed who the work was copied from, plus I found a few other cheats as well.

I use custom columns to show words quantity’s in Office files and the last time they were modified.

1. Mostly for very easy File and folder managing (search!!, copy, move, delete, rename), quick search is a very handy tool. In My Computer and in a network.
2. File pre-viewing (some plugins are wonderful!)
3. Archiving (in a lot of formats: ZIP, RAR, ARJ, 7z...)
4. FTP
5. Folder synchronizing
6. Mass renaming
7. CD Burning (CD/DVD Burning plugin)
8. Mail previewing (via plugin)
9. And many useful plugins: Registry, Startup...

For over 10 years, TC has been my most frequently-used Windows app. In fact, I almost never use Win Explorer. I carry TC around on USB for when I work on other PC's. I just can't work productively without it.

When I do a (re)build, I fire up Explorer just to install TC. Then I put TC on the Win taskbar and remove any Explorer shortcuts, etc. - as I never need it again.

Well, almost never: I recently had to fire up Explorer to create the "god-mode" directory - that was just the 2nd time I had to fire it up on this 3 month old Win7 build! Otherwise, always TC.

As someone else said, check out the help file and these forums for lots of ideas. After 10+ years, it's still easy for me to find other neat stuff to do with TC. When you take into account TC's many plugins, you'll find things you can do with it that you would never have imagined! It's possibilities are inexhaustible.

All Hail Total Commander!
