Search enhancement

Post by *tomkaten »

Hi, Christian !

I have a huge folder with about 110 000 files, lots of subfolders and archives, rar and zip, in it and many nested archives.

I frequently have to search for a string of text inside that folder and its subdirectories. I've tried creating a triple nested zip in another empty folder, containing a single .TXT file with one word, to check whether the file finder tool in TC would find strings of text in files inside nested archives. It didn't find a thing, so the answer to that is no, I guess.

Would it be possible to expand the current "search inside archives" feature in the current search engine to include nested archives ? Or would it require too much effort ? It would be a lifesaver for people in my situation.

Thanks and my apologies if this has already been requested.

I think that in your specific case it would be better to use a separate standalone search tool with a search index, since you frequently search the same folder for text.

I can honestly recommend the PowerGREP: http://www.powergrep.com/

Great, thanks a lot for the answer, Chris, and Horsi, for your recommendation. I will give it a go. Take care.
