Pulling backups from web server

Post by *Joe Siegler »

I just got a new dedicated server set up for several websites I run, and as part of my backup procedure, I wanted to set up something where I had my local computer go in and pull the daily backup files via FTP to my local computer at home. Basically use my own machine as the "off site backup".

I'm using Windows 7 Home Pro, 64-bit, and using the latest betas of the 64bit 8.0 TC.

What I'm looking to find out is how do I go about using TC for this? I've been using TC for ages now, but have never expanded the program via plugins, or used it for any feature beyond what it comes with. So I have no idea how/what to look for and do for this.

Or if it's even possible - although I imagine it probably is. Could use some guidance. Thanks.

I don't think TC is the best tool for the job. You can of course connect to FTP and download what you want, but you have to do it manually and repeat it again and again. In most cases, manual backups lead to doing it only rarely and when something fails, you'll realize that the most recent backup is month old, because you were going to make next one tomorrow.

It's better to get specialized backup application. Once configured, it will run by itself and has no problem making backups regularly every day or even several times a day if needed. The hardest part is probably choosing the right one, as there are quite a lot of them. Personally I use freeware Cobian Backup and it does everything I need.
