Also I appreciate! I ask for an it is awaiting.

But I have misunderstand something: why is named 'combined' and on 32bit don't work?

The message is: tc80x64_32rc2.exe is not a valid Win32 application.
I have WinXP SP3 32bits.

Which versions are supported by combined package?

This is not a standard combined installer - instead of installing either 32b or 64b version based on the user's system, this "combined" installer installs both versions. It's for users who want to use TCx64, but for some reason also want to have TCx32 - this way they don't have to use two installers, just one.

I think it should be obvious that the combined installer is for 64bit operating systems only! The download page clearly mentions that they are for 64bit only! Combined means that it has both the 32 and 64bit version of Total Commander.

Check the download link and see which operating systems are supported for each installer.

Code: Select all

32-bit (Windows 95 up to Windows 7, 32-bit AND 64-bit!)
64-bit (Windows XP,Vista and 7, ONLY 64-bit!)
64-bit+32-bit combined (Windows XP,Vista and 7, ONLY 64-bit!)
You can extract it however the combined installer on your 32bit copy of Windows XP, by decompressing the installer, and after that decompressing INSTALL.CAB. You will only be able to use the 32bit version, because TOTALCMD64.EXE will give the same exact error message that you got in the first place.

And why would anyone do that? It's easier to use a different installer.

edit:
Also, he was referring to the name "combined installer", because it usually means something different than in this case.

Yes I know that it's easier to do that. the download page clearly said that it's only for 64bit operating systems. I just told him if he wants to see for himself that it's possible to install it even on a 32bit version of Windows. However the other version will not work.

It was just some extra information just for the other people who likes to experiment with stuff. Please don't bash me for just some additional sentences. I clearly understood what's going on and could figure it out without asking someone else.

Thank you very much Umbra!
Now is clear.

My old ask was to be exactly one 'combined' package for all situations. The installer must be smart enough to determine the OS and ask the right questions, depends on users.

Maybe the exe header is totally different and won't work. At WinRAR is the same, two installers for each version (32b & 64b).

Anyway it's a step!

Mr. Ghisler, I appreciate!

I joined this forum just two weeks before you, so I definitely don't have any right to "bash" you. 8) It's just that using those steps to install TC would be awkward at least, especially when there are better ways to do it.

Personally, I have some doubts about usefulness of this package. Beginners won't use it, because they won't understand (or like) switching between both TC versions. And for an advanced user, it should not be too hard to install and configure both versions exactly as he wants. A classic combined installer (the one you were expecting) would be more useful.

It doesn't really matter that when you joined or how many posts you have! I think there's np competition to win here. We are just helping others out! I just tried to be nice and helpful by providing some additional information, and nothing more. The error that eugensyl got are pretty much self explanatory. There's a huge difference between the two architectures and the installers, but it's not impossible to get the combined installer unpacked. It's just a workaround, even if seems to be stupid!

I can tell you why - I have TC portable on an external drive with Both versions on.
AT home where I Update my TC I only have a 32Bit-System
and use my selfwritten Tool TCUpdater to Update my TC.
(my Tool extracts the installer, extracts the cabs and tells me then wich files are new and wich are changed - then i can choose wich files I want to be updated)
This way I have to do that only with one File as of before i had to do the same twice.

I think you missed the point. It's not very useful to tell someone, who is using 32-bit Windows, to extract this "combined" package and use only its 32-bit part. It was later, when sztihamer explained that it was meant just as a general-purpose bonus information.

BTW, that TCUpdater of yours sounds useful. Currently I do it manually, so maybe I'll write something like that too.

Thanks for the new combined installer. It's more universal and less confusing now, when it works on 32b Windows too.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

A huge step.
This new installer is working like a charm.

Thank you Mr. Ghiler - Master of the TC!
I appreciate.
:D

Also, you can add to the "Features in Total Commander 8.0 now include" on site:
- Universal installer (32&64 bit)
My Best Wishes,

Eugen
