I have installed the 64bit version of TC v8 but the 'About' dialog displays 32bit.
Is this by design or an error?
What about 'About'?

It works just fine! Just checked and it works as it should be. Check the icon of the executable. If it has a little 64 on the floppy disk that means you are running the 64bit version. If not then it's the 32bit version.
Here's a screenshot of my test installation. The about dialog mentions 64bit: http://i.imgur.com/fgcnr.png

Hmm! I run the 64bit installer ontop of my 32bit TC installation (om Win7 64bit).
I didn't use the combined version which I would assume could trigger the compatible variant.
I'll check if I did something wrong and get back at you.
Minor off topic mishap the history file omits mentioning the intermediate v.7.57 release but I presume maybe deliberately due to duplicated fixes.

If you installed the 64b version on top of the 32b one, then you should have a shortcut for each version. Anyway, the easiest way to check what version you are running is to check its title bar.

Shortcut "issue" (no issue

Initially I though the use of 32bit plugins forced this somehow but that's not the case.
Thanks for the other thread reference also.
