Can anyone provide a link which describes the main differences between v7.5x and V8.0. I've done a search of he forums without success, and TC's help file's "What's New" section stops at v7.03.

Thanks. I've looked at the history file in your second link but it lists all the changes (bugfixes, improvements and presumably new features etc). I'm looking for link which only lists the new features in v8, and describes the old features which work differently in v8.

Am I hoping for too much here?

Maybe the tool in the first link will be helpful in this regard.

Open the Total Commander 8.0 helpfile totalcmd.chm. (TOTALCMD.CHM 430.343 23.05.2012 08:00 -a--)

The right panel offers a section named 1.b What's new in this version. From top to bottom this section explains for the final version 8.0, 8.0rc2, 8.0rc1, 8.0 beta 25 ... 8.0 beta 1 what has been changed in each single version compared to its predecessor.
Below the sections about T.C. 8.0 there are the sections about each v7.5x versions. Below those the sections about the v7.0x version.
All in all the "What's new in this version?" goes from 8.0 final down to 4.0.

So I do not quite understand what exactly it is you cannot find in your helpfile.

Because he asked for a plain and simple summary of the main features and changed in 8.0 (a.k.a "why should I upgrade to this version?"). Not to wade through a long list of incremental changes and bug fixes of any iteration since beta and for each item, try to figure out whether this is an important change in 8.0 or just a fix to a fix to a minor change 3 beta version before...

I was searching for a such a list myself and this is what most people are looking for in "what's new in version" list. A standard practice for new version, really.

Reading through the current 8.0 "What's new in this version" takes a little bit more time as a consequence. I admit. But it is present. And it is as simple finding it as it has always been.

Normal users don't know that and they shouldn't care. I guess that if you don't understand why someone would like to take a glance at a concise list of several "what's new" features and decide whether they like to install the new version or not instead of installing it and then looking through a helpfile of few dozens irrelevant items, there is little I can say to further explain that.

A perfectly acceptable answer to this would be "Sorry, TC doesn't currently have such a list" but painting someone as incompetent for wanting such a list, especially when this is something that many normal users would expect to see, is not.

Anyway, I just wanted to add my 2c and we established that such a list doesn't exist. I guess there is little else I can add to this discussion.

Sorry, I fail to see what is so offensive about the quoted paragraph. I tend to assume that what made you angry were mainly the last two sentences though they are simply two statements about the location of the "What's new in this version" section and do not hold any speculation about anybody's competence or incompetence.


Perhaps the programme author Christian Ghisler can be bothered to transform the lenghty section about T.C. 8.0 (beta1 to final version) into the short form which he used up to version 7.56a. - I have got no clue why he chose the lenghty format for T.C. 8.0 and not a short summary.


From a marketing perspective this was not the smartest approach to take, because the first statement which you read about T.C. 8.0 in the "What's new in this version" is this:

New functions and fixes in Total Commander 8.0 final

- This is a bugfix release, there are no new features

Open the Total Commander 8.0 helpfile totalcmd.chm. (TOTALCMD.CHM 430.343 23.05.2012 08:00 -a--)

The right panel offers a section named 1.b What's new in this version. From top to bottom this section explains for the final version 8.0, 8.0rc2, 8.0rc1, 8.0 beta 25 ... 8.0 beta 1 what has been changed in each single version compared to its predecessor.
Below the sections about T.C. 8.0 there are the sections about each v7.5x versions. Below those the sections about the v7.0x version.
All in all the "What's new in this version?" goes from 8.0 final down to 4.0.

So I do not quite understand what exactly it is you cannot find in your helpfile.

If I open HELP from the TC Help Toolbar icon, history stops at v7.03. If I open c:\totalcmd\TOTALCMD.CHM directly from a TC panel I can see history for 8.x.

I installed v8 over v7.x. I'll have to look for another TOTALCMD.CHM which is being displayed when I invoke help from the toolbar icon.

CharlesF wrote the changelog for T.C. 8.0 were not in the T.C. helpfile, because it stopped at T.C. 7.03.
The "What's new in this version" of the T.C. 8.0 helpfile does not stop at T.C. 7.03. It covers T.C. 4.0 to 8.0.
This is why I cannot understand what CharlesF is complaining about. It seems he looked at an outdated T.C. helpfile.
Yet, as he has not posted back we cannot be sure.

There is one difference between the "What's new in this version" of T.C. 8.0 and previous versions:
In previous versions Christian gave a brief summary/list of the most important changes brought by the new version. In this version (8.0) he mentions every single beta and release candidate version between T.C. 7.56a and 8.0 final.
Reading through the current 8.0 "What's new in this version" takes a little bit more time as a consequence. I admit. But it is present. And it is as simple finding it as it has always been.

I agree. We should not continue bashing each other. Let us start bashing the programme author instead for not having taken the time of creating a concise summary of new features in T.C. 8.0 in the section "What's new in this version". (1)

Updating T.C. from version to version is perfectly all right.
Simply remove the outdated totalcmd.hlp file and correct your button to point to the current totalcmd.chm instead.

You would have to reinstall the plugins one by one. The toolbar file(s) can be copied back to the programme folder and re-activated.
Yet, provided the helpfile confusion is the only trouble you experienced with your update installation, starting all over from the scratch may not be worth the time.

And glad to learn that you found at least some of the replies which you received helpful. (Admittedly, not all of them were.)
