Error when configuring more than 24 custom columns

This applies to both 32bit and 64bit TC 8.0

If I try to make more than 24 custom columns in one custom column view TC fails.

1. No new custom column is made
2. The Caption of the last column is changed to either:

The Caption of the new column you tried to make.
The three first letters of the Caption of the last column + the Caption of the new column you tried to make.

This is if the 25th column is added to the end of the list - if it is added further up in the list, the new column is made alright, but then the last two columns are deleted and the Caption of the new last column is changed.

In wincmd.ini the ContentsX= and WidthsX= lines are updated correctly - it is the HeadersX= line that is not written correctly.

Sorry, more than 24 columns aren't currently supported. There are currently no plans to support more.

OK - but the handeling of it could be better - that is: when I try to define column number 25 I should get a dialog telling me that the max number of columns has been reached, and the operation should be aborted.

As it is now I end up with columns where the Caption and the Field contents does not match. In the case where I get a Caption that is a mix of the original and the new name, I will notice that something is wrong, but in the case where the entire caption is replaced with a new, I might not notice it, but the content will be wrong.

BTW - the Help file states that only 29 custom column views can be configured - but I can easily make more - what is the current limit ?

06.06.12 Fixed: Custom columns: maximum length of column title strings was erroneously limited to 259 characters instead of the supported 1023 in the column editor (32/64)

This seems to be fixed now.

But if I make more than 30 custom columns, the file panel shows the value of the 30th or 31st column in all subsequent columns.

I think TC should somehow prevent making more columns than supported.

BTW - the Help file states that only 29 custom column views can be configured - but I can easily make more - what is the current limit ?
