TC and network drives / folders are very slow / unusable

Post by *mumajsik »

Hello,
I have serious problem with Total Commander and I wan to ask you if you have any suggestion. I am using TC for long time and I had always problem to work with TC via local network. But last days I am managing a lot of servers also very far from me and TC is unusable. I have to always open altap salamander. For this I have to have two licences for file managers for long period and learn both. I want to fully move to TC, but first I have to solve problem with network.

First problem, compared with altap salamander, TC is more slower in reading of the content. I don’t know why by it loads files in shared folder very slow. I am talking about archives like 500+ files. Worst situation with 1000+ files. When I open this folder in TC then TC is frozen. I can not cancel it I just have to wait. If I receive any email during this waiting or somebody send me message on IM then I go to another app and now start first big problem… when I return back to TC it refreshs again.
I disabled probably this refresh in options. I added never refresh path starting "\". It looks this is solving the refresh, but it makes worse second issue.

My second issue… when there is so much files then broswing and clicking on files is so slow, it is mostly showing reload cursor. When it stops and I want to click on the file then it starts again. I am mostly unable to select file because TC is still doing something. I can not cancel it I can not do anything. When I am really patiend and keep TC for the time what TC needs then I am able to click on file in the list shown in the TC window, but not scroll down/up to another. If I disable above refresh function by adding \ into not refreshing folders then I am not more able to click on any file. I was in the archive folder with 1000+ files and I was not able to copy/move/open/edit/sort any of the file for 30 minutes then I killed TC and open altap salamander. Always when I tried to click on the file then it starts to do something, then the filename under cursor dissapeared and nothing happen… I clicked on the file again then situation repeats. But I was not able to do anything else. What can I do?

In altap salamander I disabled refresh network drives and then it loads the content very fast and I can work with file very, very fast…. When I need refresh then I click refresh and everything is very fast. I am talking about the same archive folder with 1000+ files. I can filtr, copy, move, everything…
But altap salamander does not know unicode and has some issues with FTP etc… TC is better for me, but how to improve the network shared folders with 1000+ files? I am now splitting files into month folders where is not too many files, but also this is slow.
Is this forum good way for support with this problem? any suggestions?

Thank you very much

Probably I made doublepost.. I used search before post and I was not able to find anything solving my issue. But now I went post by post and found this one "Slow network drive directory listing/refresh". I did proposed setup and I chcked the configuration, display, icons, "EXE/LNK not on net" and now it looks more faster. IT is not like in AS, but it us usable.. I can work with files.

Hi,

I have the impression that this topic for slow network access is an often recurring one. Maybe one of the moderators could create an overview of possible solutions and make a sticky out of it?

Although TC loads these EXE/LNK icons in a background thread, this may still cause a big slowdown, because Windows downloads large parts of an EXE/DLL just to get the icon.
