FTP is blocked by Avast FW

I'm having problems with FTP connection after installing Avast Firewall.
But if I Change to "Passive" in the FTP parameteres in TC it works.
Does this make my connection more slowly?

Passive mode uses outgoing connections (PC -> Server). This is usually more firewall-friendly, but not all FTP servers support it.
