Toolbar between two panels

Post by *HAL 9000 »

A toolbar between two panels would be very useful, is it possible?

Hey! why not?

During a TC session I use 98% keyboard / 2% mouse, but let's ask Christian if a toolbar in the middle of the two panels would be possible/useful (it can be optional)

I can't imagine which functions or command buttons include in this bar, but let other users suggest some...

Greetings and happy TCing... :P

Oh my God no!

But the GUI ist not not flexible enough!
If everyone can move the tool and buttonbars wherever he wants, then it will not have to discuss.

:) Hello !
Oh my God no!
• I sing with you :  Nooooo, please !

• It's indeed possible, but according to that I experienced giving a try to "NexusFiles", that doesn't bring any advantage
when having a "small" 17" monitor like here… That takes too much room, even using crappy tiny 16² icons…
…If everyone can move the tool and buttonbars wherever he wants, then it will not have to discuss.
• That's also questionable. For instance, a while ago, a friend- programmer (I worked with him a lot)
tried to implement such "floating" bars = a disaster, because they turned into "chewing-gum bars", you know ?
Same as the damned "mobile" Win bars on the Desktop, a pain in the neck to restore as the right shape and location…
• That doesn't match the current TC GUI style, and could be used by a few users only, I guess…

I think you are right ...

It is off-tropic but, is it really so difficult to implement "floating" bars?
Many other programs use this. Other not, perhaps for the same reason?

Remember the Tabbar thread, for example
http://ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?p=148003#148003
I would want to have the Tabbar on the Button, too. :(

A middle vertical toolbar would indeed be useful for operations between panels (copy, move, pack, unpack) and also fo drag'n drop enabled operations that already work with the bottom bar (View, Edit, Delete).

The dragging process would be imho way shorter and hence more efficient, instead of having to go across the entire TC window to the bottom-right or bottom-left corners for a Delete or View operation from the opposite panels.

Sergio

If you are describing toolbars that can be resized and dragged out of place by accident, then I can relate. MS Office pre-ribbon toolbars, Photoshop "palettes". A good interface has a "Lock" toggle command, directly accessible when right-clicking anywhere on a floating toolbar. When activated, the bar or entire interface layout is frozen. I sometimes accidentally drag the separator between TC's panels, but not as often as in the other examples.
