Archive to Archive dragging justed stop working.

Post by *Spiderkeys »

I'm was using Total Commander on Windows 2000, and something out of the blue happened as I was sorting around with My ZIPs, RARs, 7z, etc.

Dragging a file from one Archive to Another such as a file from ZIP to RAR, or 7z to RAR, etc. etc, and vice-versa, just ignores me, nothing no longer happens.

I even more surprised the problem remained even after a clean full reboot, and completely, out of ideas, I tried a portable version of TC from a different drive and the problem remains.

I can still drag a file just from a folder to an Archive, but any Archive to Archive operations no longer works.

I turned on Total Commander's logging options on, and continued to keep trying to drag files, and no infomation there either.

I wasn't using any externals packers or anything, only internals ones.

Now problem even still exists in safe mode, that's very strange, unsure what got corrupted out of nowhere, TC or my O/S?

The answer is easy: TC does NOT support (and never has) packing into RAR archive internally !
Just unpacking is supported. For packing you need external RAR program.

That doesn't matter. It's possible to copy a file from one archive to another archive, no matter if the target is RAR, ZIP, 7Z or whatever. TC calls the external packer or packer extension if necessary. I just tried it: Opened 7Z on the left and RAR on the right, dragged a file from the left to the right side and confirmed the dialog - TC launched WinRAR and the file was packed into the RAR.

Is the "Pack files" popping up when you drag the file from one archive to the other? If so, what happens when you confirm it?

Do you have any external packer configured for any of the archive types?

Yes the Comfiration box comes up before I request it, under normal circumsations I have keep it turned off, so I kept it at defaults, press OK then nothing happens, no file gets copied.

Now got me thinking, maybe my wincmd.ini could be corrupt so I hunted it down which oddly to me was sitting in D:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\GHISLER\ folder, (I always thought it was supposed to sit in the totalcmd folder itself, so anyway did that, my settings all revert back to default like a fresh copy, but problem still remains, I can still unpack from Archive to Folder, or folder to Archive as normal, but any Archive to Archive dragging just isn't no longer working.

Maybe external packers configuration is wrong? Are you able to add files from regular folders to these archive types?

Though this is limited to RAR archives - unless WinRAR is configured to handle other archive types as well: Which version of WinRAR are you using?

The last version working on Win2k is 4.11, despite what was disussed in this thread about the unrar.dll (latest official working version on Win2k is 5.1.0). However, the unrar.dll also affects TC itself since it's shipped with a version which doesn't work on Win2k. There's a modified unrar.dll in the linked thread that works on Win2k.

Actually I rarely work with RAR files, just about most of my Archive operations have been dragging from ZIP to 7z.

I just been testing all other Archives on a working Windows XP O/S and then Windows 2000 on the dual-boot machine which 2000 no longer likes any of my archives from TC anymore, for some odd reason.

Still not quite the end of the world, I do have old copies of WinRAR, WinZIP, and 7z on windows 2000, just now a pain organising my archieves on that O/S now with TC.

Well, what about external packers? Do you have any configured or do you use TC's internal 7zip function?

I think old version of 7Z plugin (maybe this one) should work under W2K, and it is much better than external packers.
