MultiRenameTool uses file extenstion, even on folders?

Post by *adoeller »

Hi,

i want to rename dirs with "." in the dir name, e.g. "Test Case 5.3".
The MRT splits the name according at the ".", as if it was a file name.

I would not think of file name extensions when working with dirs.
Please have a look at the screenshot.

You can use the mask: [N].[E](Type V) in the name field and delete the [E] in the extension field...

Hi,

this is possbile, of corse.

My point is, that dirs don't have file extensions and thus dots in dir names should not be handled as such.

Who says that dirs don't have extensions ?
Its completely legal from Microsoft and some users have it.

Dirs can have dots, but they are meaningless and pose no extension.

have you seen TC showing an extension for dirs with a dot? sorting dirs by its extension?

A file system entry for a "DIR" is the same as a entry for a "FILE",
the only difference is the directory attribute.

So TC works with that definition and makes no difference in MRT between folders and files.

Yes, the MRT could check that "dir" attribute, but it doesn't, because the user is responsible
and maybe one want to have a kind of extension on dirs?

So TC just follows the rule to be not that smart and let users do what they want.

There may be other tools who will aid you more...?

Maybe you want to make a feature request for an option?
But this is not a bug and "TC8.5x bug reports (English)" is the wrong forum.

You can actually sort dirs by extension - but you have to add the parameter SortDirExt=1 to your wincmd.ini

The problem is that it would break a lot of saved rename options if I changed that now...
