Issues of TotalCmd on Windows 10

Post by *whytea »

Finally upgraded to Windows 10 and noticed the following issues with TotalCmd.

TotalCmd version: 8.52b1

1) Upgrade from 8.51a -> 8.52b1
- Unlike Windows 7 or earlier, the upgrade process was unable to
shut down the running copy of TotalCmd. It had to be shut down
manually before the upgrade would be successful.

2) The file names in Chinese are displayed in different size! This is not
a problem with Windows File Manager. See screen capture of the two:

1) It's a known problem which will be fixed before the final release

2) Choose a different font for file lists which contains Chinese charaters. The different font means that the currently chosen font does not contain these characters, so Windows automatically uses a substitution font.

Thanks for the reply.

For issue 2), the choice of Microsoft YaHei font fixes the problem. Why wasn't this a problem previously, e.g. Win7? I think it should work right out of the box as in Windows 10's File Manager.

It really depends on the font used for the file lists - the Explorer probable uses a language-specific font which contains these characters.

My initial thought was the same... But it doesn't make sense, I should probably explain it a bit more as you might not notice how the fonts were shown in the screen capture. The display was actually OK, but the characters varied in size within a file name! How is that possible? :)

The font used by default in TC (Segoe UI Semibold) probably contains only a part of the characters. These will be displayed in Segoe UI Semibold as expected. The characters which are missing will be displayed in a font chosen by Windows as a substitution font containing the missing characters. It is up to Windows to choose a matching font, but that font could have quite a different size for the characters even if the point size is the same (e.g. Arial).
