Session timeout changed?

Post by *chasbas »

Was the session timeout in this forum changed to a very short value? A couple of times already my session has timed out, once while I was typing in a comment (and being interrupted a lot). I thought we were considering making the session timeout longer instead of shorter?

It always happens to me if I lose connection and reconnect. I have to press Refresh in Internet Explorer. Mozilla seems to be free of this "inconvenience" but I'm not sure.

When I close my Browser (Opera 6.05) for a very short time all unread topics get read.
I would like to see a longer timeout too.

This behaviour seems to be by design.
If you close your browser, you close your active session.
If your session is closed, you are obviously not interested in remaining unread posts => all marked read

When I'm not interested in remaining unread posts I'll follow the Mark all forums read link (otherwise this link seems to be completely useless).

[edit]
But you're right - I've noticed this behaviour on other phpBB2's too ...

I understand what you're saying, but the truth is more complex. Being human, I sometimes close the wrong browser window (I ususally have several open at once). Sometimes IE crashes and blows out all open IE windows. It just seems anti-intuitive to make such a decision for a user, that he is finished reading everything new, without giving him a chance to confirm that.

Imagine if your email reader did that. Or a web site with a lot of links that decided as soon as you closed the browser it would mark all those links as having been visited. This behavior by a bulletin board makes life very complex unless I follow the rules set down in stone by the creators of the software, and I'm very bad at following rules.

I haven't changed the timeout yet, it's still one hour. However, when a session is closed (by closing the browser), all threads are marked as read automatically. Perhaps someone knows a phpbb mod to avoid this?

There is a Unread Post Information to Database-Mod on phpbb2.de.

Another solution would be the Search Posts by time-Mod on phpBBHacks.com.

OK, I will have a look at them. However, I will probably not use a mod which requires changes to the database structure, this is too dangerous for me.
