w10 1803 [17134.1] - Smartscreen dialog not appearing

Post by *eL_PuSHeR »

Hello.

Since I have updated to w10 v1803 [17134.1] (clean installation) I have found out that I cannot launch (execute) anything from within TC.

Double clicking on an executable file just displays the hourglass for a few seconds and then nothing. I have found out that the smartscreen dialog isn't appearing from TC, because double clicking on the same executable from windows explorer is fine. Then I can click on smartscreen and choose "Run anyway"...

Any ideas?

I don't have this problem on 17134 here (manual update from previous version via Media Creation Tool). It even works when running Total Commander with higher user rights.

Do you see anything in Windows event viewer? Control panel - Administration - Even viewer?

Odd. One of the executables that was failing earlier is now running properly. No smartscreen dialog this time.

Where should I look inside Event viewer? It's like a labyrinth in there...

PS - Upon opening event viewer I see two DistributedCOM events (I don't know what these are) and some warnings stating DNS resolver errors for cdn.content.prod.cms.msn.com

I will keep testing. It seems that the issue has resolved itself.

Hmm, maybe the smart screen filter needs an internet connection to function properly.

Yes, that's how SmartScreen works. It's kind of a reputation thing that checks especially new executables and blocks them if they're unknown or known to be bad (malware). Note that there are two different SmartScreen things in Windows 10: One in Windows Defender and one in Microsoft Edge. Same name, same goal but one can switch them off separately.

Hello.

The same thing happened today again. I am now at Win10 [17134.81].

It seems it only happens for K-Lite codec pack installers.

Anyway. This seems like a bug to me. Smartscreen dialog appears under File Explorer (it's a crappy UWP dialog btw) but not under Total Commander.

Either use the latest beta (TC 9.20 beta 5), or open it via right click menu.
