Back to basics - question about installation directory

I installed TC in "c:\ Program Files\totalcmd".

However, I'm now having some problems related to access rights. The account that I use on my PC is not an Administrator, and I do this for security reasons. However, I discovered that when I try to install plugins, specifically Plugman, I run into problems with access to the TC installation directory and the installation of the plugin (as well as other ones) fails.

Two questions arise: Would you recommend that I install TC in a directory outside Program Files? Ideally I would prefer to avoid this in order to keep all my installed programs in the default Windows directories.

Secondly, if I should install TC outside the Program Files directories, is there a way to move the current installation there or would I have to start from the beginning?

EDIT: I ran Plugman.exe as Administrator and it's possible to install plugins using this program. Perhaps this is the answer.

Plugman as admin is not a solution
because later the plugins can't write its ini files.

There are many possibilities.

Me think best for you is let it like it is now and just give the user change permission on TCs folder.

- select TCs folder
- right click
- properties
- Security tab
- press the Edit button
- select your user name or the group USERS
- check [x] Modify (Allow)
- OK .... etc to close all


Now you have write access to TCs folder.

Another way would be to install somewhere outside of ProgramFiles folder.
You can try even now to move (or first copy) TCs folder outside of ProgramFiles folder and use it from there.
The INI files are stored below of %AppData% and are found from any install folder.
(One can move the INI to TCs folder to be more "portable", but that's another story
and can be found already many times in the forum ; search keyword "UseIniInProgramDir=7")

Thank you for the information. I read some time ago (probably related to an earlier OS than Windows 10 which is what I have) that programs installed in the two default 'Program Files' directories are more secure than if installed elsewhere. That's why I chose to install TC in Program Files.

By the way, thanks for the wiki address. I'll have a look.

EDIT: I gave myself access to the totalcmd directory.
