Preview Files Very Slow

Post by *fc62 »

I have a problem with previewing files. I installed total commander on a new PC and I set the same configuration I've been using for years. (Same wincmd.ini file and same addon configuration).
Unfortunately, to preview all files, the software freezes and I have to wait several minutes for the preview to appear. This happens with both F3 and Ctrl + Q.
I tried to install the software several times but I did not solve the problem. What can I do? It's very important for me as I use TC for my job and preview files in extremely useful.
Thanks

It is probably some virus checking of a lister plugin - does it happen with all kind of files or just for images for example. Does it also happen the second time you preview the same file?

Would you please spend some more time
and tell us what Lister plugins you have installed
and what file types you are viewing.
And by the way what version of TC ?
You posting is almost useless with any info at all.

The problem seems to be the ulister plugin. It's a plugin I've been using for a long time and it's very useful for me to view different types of files. If I delete the plugin the problem seems to resolve. I note that on the PC I have two users. With the second user, the problem does not occur. Is there an alternative to the ulister plugin? What can I do to understand what interferes?

I can confirm that - it takes 6 seconds to load here with ulister. It's probably because ulister uses a lot of dlls, and the virus scanner scans them all. You could try to add the "redist" directory to the igonore list of your scanner. I doubt that Oracle is distributing any viruses. Just make sure to test the files manually if you ever update them.

I completely uninstalled the antivirus (Bitdefender) but the problem has not been solved. What other programs could conflict with Ulister?
The laptop is new and I have very few installed sofware. How can it be explained that if I switch users, the problem does not occur?

Have you checked that Windows Defender hasn't been enabled in stead by the system?

I don't see long delays with Ulister on my system.
I use it a lot for Office files.
I have Kaspersky Antivirus installed.

I have also disabled Windows Defender. It is obvious that there is software or some other kind of conflicting control. As I wrote before, I use the same configuration of TC (Same as wincmd.ini files) in at least four different computers and have never encountered this kind of problem. Maybe some Windows setting, but I'm not sure what to check. The delay to make the prewiev appear is not seconds but it takes a few minutes (3-5 minutes), so it is clear that there is some kind of interference with other software. Suggestions on what to check apart from the antivirus?

It could help if you told us what OS you are using...

In my Windows 10 Home 10.0.17134 build 17134 if I go into "Windows Defender Security Center" -> "Virus & threat protection" -> "Virus & threat protection settings". it says:
Real-time protection
Locates and stops malware from installing or running on your device. You can turn off this setting for a short time before it turns back on automatically.
So maybe that happened to you (it turned back on automatically)?

Three basic questions:

Which file types are the most important for you?
Maybe just exclude less important file types?

Can you post an example file for which the preview opens for so long?
Without private or confidential information, of course
Without a real example, it's hard to judge anything

What are the differences between two user accounts?

The most important files for me are of various kinds: word, excel, outlook messages, pdf, etc.
However after several attempts I decided to restore Windows and reinstall everything from 0. Now TC works perfectly and also Ulister.
I'm monitoring the various apps that I'm gradually installing to verify which one is creating conflict. If I find out something I will insert it in this discussion.
Thanks anyway for the help

Do you have some scripts running in the background ?
