BUG: 9.22 TC - Black Screen of Death. A huge Memory Leak. Out of Memory

Post by *makinero »

BUG: 9.22 TC - Black (not Blue) Screen of Death. A huge Memory Leak.

Windows 7 64-bit 12 GB RAM

Windows system failure/crash:
The system was restarted without prior clean closure. The reason for this error may be the fact that the system has stopped responding, has failed or unexpectedly lost power.
MemoryExhaustionInfo
Windows has successfully diagnosed the lack of memory condition.
The heap can not be allocated

Reproduce:
SHIFT + F10
Open 20-50 folders (Small size)

Should not use so much RAM. Even Explorer - it does not use that much!
TC - it does not control it, after a while the System completely stops and Black Screen of Death is displayed and the System Reset is required.

Ctrl+F10 is to change view to show all files. It does NOT open any folder.

It's a problem with Windows Explorer. You can turn off TC and try to open many folders in Windows Explorer. It depends on Explorer settings (a.k.a. "Folder options", f.e. "Run folder windows in separate threads"), installed shell extensions, content of selected folders (number of files and file types) and free resources. With TC heavily used it just may occur earlier (TC doesn't release memory used by search in a separate thread).

BTW. In Windows XP Explorer displays warning - you should be careful when opening so many folders at a time. Did you see such warning in your system? If yes, why did you ignore it?

Edited in italics: to describe more possible crash factors.

Usher - But where do you see such a message in TC? There is no message in the style: Do you really want to open so many folders YES, NO?
Of course you can not stop this process when it's already running!
Besides - I really do not like when someone tries to create a situation that has nothing to do with my problem?
I have a very small SSD, with small folders, no HDD.
Out of curiosity, I wanted to check how the Total Commander will behave when it opens the super-small folders in large quantities.
I do not need to open many folders, but I like such tests.

Code: Select all

Initial test (failed after more than 20 folders at once)
Select: OPEN 45 folders 195 subfolders / All size: 1,16GB)
This is ridiculous, so many Gigabytes (Total: RAM 12 GB + 10000 MB Virtual Memory) need for those folders with some text files?
Do not make me laugh! :D :D :D

Could you clean your glasses or buy new ones, please?
It's Windows Explorer warning and Windows Explorer crash.
EOT for me.

You always know better? He did not prove that opening in Windows Explorer, no problem even 100+ folders at once and does not use 100% RAM!

Open via Total Coammander - sucked failure.

Strange, when I try to select many folders in TC or in Explorer, I don't see Open context menu item at all.
Explorer simply hides Open item when I open context menu for more than 15 folders (I use Windows 7 64-bit) so I can only guess how could you test opening 100+ folders.

I've tried to Open 15 folders of total size more than 60 GB, and haven't noticed any memory usage growth in TC or system. The only thing that I then had to close all these Explorer windows, but that's an Explorer problem (and mine because I've tested it)...

Your paranoid intent to blame TC in all your problems is ridiculous again.

I only report what happens when I try to open many folders at once in the Total Coammander application.
I gave errors in the Event Log that occurred and that there was a Windows system failure and the screen turned black, so I had to restart the computer, so the system was not normal closed. Such failures can result in data loss!
You do not have a complete idea that such problems can occur in the application.
I prefer to listen to the wise than your jokes!

@MVV - Prove on the video that you open 100 folders in Total Coammander, you can not prove it because it's impossible to do.
SELECT 100 FOLDERS (TC) AND OPEN (ATT THE SAME TIME!!!)
You can only talk, talk, talk, talk i need you screen, and complete logs that you do it in TC.

Horst.Epp - you are simply afraid of taking this test, because you are well aware that nothing good will come of it and you want to avoid failure

So I started my Win 7 Pro 64bit VM and tried to reproduce this problem.
As soon as I select more than 15 folders in TC I no longer have "Open" action in the context menu.
@makinero how exactly do you open more than 15 folders at once?
