WHY TC is hung?

Post by *Jqn »

Hi again,
When I try to copy (or delete) a folder from Network (a big, big folder, of course), I press F5 (or Del), then TC is hung by a lot of time. Probably 5 or 10 minutes.

But not only TC is hung on his principal window, but also on all threads and FTP downloads actives at the moment.

Why so much time?.
To make copies I can understand it, but why also to delete?

I press F5 (or Del)
:? :?:
IMHO F8 is for deleting.
BTW, the standard is:
F8 or Del moving the files in a trash folder (recycler).
If you use Shift+F8 the Files are directly deleted.

Probably my phrase is not explained well (I use an automatic translator)
I press F5 for Copy.
I press Del for Delete. (I never use F8, nor Trash Folder)

The problem is not what TC does, but:
1. The time that it is late in beginning.
2. TC is hung while it "thinks" what it must do.

(Copying a folder that contains 17000 files and 700MB it has been hung 16.5 minutes, and later it has begun the copy of the first file)

to eliminate the waiting time you can turn off this in the Configuration dialog

Operation>Calculate space occupied by subdirectories
and uncheck before copying/deleting

is pretty selfexplenatory is it?

And why is there a space calculation before deleting needed? Well for the verysame reason as by copying. So you can see how much percent is deleted (to calculate this you need to know what is the entire sum of all flyz errr... files)

But regretably by unchecking this option you will loose the ability to see what is the progress by copying aaaand deleting
:(

And why does this Windows Explorer do quicker? Simple because unlike TC the explorer uses a programing technique called something like "multiple threads" for counting space in subfolder though he counts the used space simultaneously on multiple subfolders which is quicker and it even doesn't jam the main program while doing so...

2ford prefect

Thanks. This explanation seems very good.
It's not possible for me to check it in this moment, but I think that I have this option activated.

Next monday I will test it copying again a big folder.

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.

Oh, someone remembers ;)

Well as I see it, my sole purpose here in the TC forum is now only to encourage icfu to use the "So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish." signature as often as possible, scanning for the usage of the 42 number, learning something about TC, people and everything... aaaand maybe writing a few posts as a by product

BTW I.C.-what? aaaahhh Q Now I remember :D

Thank you for welcoming me

Post by *ford prefect »

First of all
Since I turned this thread into a huge OT I'd like to apologize to the founder and random readers, of this thread...

Seconds but not least important
Thank you Black Dog, I'm very honored to have this rare personal welcoming from you :)
(No double senses, no background deep philosophical thought, I really mean it!)

Thirds
I'm working on it! ;) But my work is sooo slooow, it takes eons to finish. Also, since I've left the forum in a very unpleasant position as I promised Mr. Ghisler to help with a WEB help or CHM conversions for the TC help and DID NOTHING significantly helpful (oh! the unbearable shame :() I will be trying to fix that as first...
The fireworx ssaver is really in development! And should be ready until Silvester 2004!!!
Meanwhile at least Roman and few other enthusiasts can enjoy the fruits of my TC T-Shirt clothing-inventor skills ;)

and Fourths
I was tuning my "oh! so standard black wall with 'THE NUMBER'" avatar to give it some new designer fashion look and all of a sudden,
my contact slipped all the way back in my eye and I couldn't find it. So, I thought, "Hey! Let's do some major suction!" So, I got this plunger and... well...
:D :D :D
