Not sure if I'm missing something, but there seems to be no option whilst copying to do the transfer in the background.
I'm seeing plenty of search results about background copying already being a feature, but its not there at all in my TC 9.51. -- I'm copying from local to MTP.

You can either use the "Background Transfer Manager" (you find it under the menu item "Commands")
You can also in the Copy/Move dialog (that pops up when you press F5) click the button "F2 Queue".
You can also just move an ongoing copy process to the background by clicking the button "Background" in the Copy progress dialog.
