Make sorting of directories "Like files (also by time)" the default.

Post by *petermad »

Almost every day (at least every week) users here on the forum complains that foldes are not sorted like the files - and they have to be advised to go into "Configuration" -> "Options..." -> "Display" - > "Sorting directories" and select "Like files (also by time)".

Maybe it would be a good idea to make that the default setting for new users.

Really? Haven't noticed that.

In any case the help page named "Sort" should be improved. Add another hint about sorting directories by time. And use boldface for Name, Extension, etc.

I would keep the default sorting as is (but both is fine).

In any case: Please keep the square brackets!!! This makes it much easier to quickly distinguish between dirs and files.

Also remove square brackets from dirs.
Have you tried disabling the option: "Configuration" -> "Options..." -> "Display" -> "File display" -> "Show square brackets [] around directories" ;-)

Or - do you mean that this should not be enabled by default?

Yes, I meant disabled by default. I've disabled mine decades ago ;-)

Furthermore, I would like it moved to .ini settings instead of taking valuable space in configuration window.

Ambaquista,
If I am not mistaken, the setting in question is persistent.
If that is correct, then I would assume that a one-time change in the Configuration makes the user happy forever.
Am I missing anything?

Best,

As you can see in this page, is´nt a setting problem.
TC didn´t allow this configuration, just:
Directories allways first (sorted or not sorted) and files after (sorted or not sorted)

For those who are interested, there is currently a alternative solution via a detour.
However, it is not a 1:1 replacement for this proposal(!).

A mix of directories and files is displayed in the 'Everything' tool.
The search result in 'Everything' is then processed as a search result in Total Commander.

Everything 1.5.0.1315a (x64)
View -> Sort by -> Mix Files and Folders

Total Commander
Open Everything GUI results with TC LOADLIST - AutoHotkey (.AHK) SCRIPT and GUIDANCE, discussions
Transfer 'Everything' GUI results to Total Commander - STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE, summary

I think it would be a good idea to have a checkbox in "custom columns" for sorting directories.
I prefer sorting folders by name, but I have some custom column views that are specific to folders which means I need to change sorting option for folders every time I use them in TC's global settings.

Maybe the internal command cm_SwitchDirSort will help you from a button or an Alias?

ghisler(Author) wrote: 2016-12-08, 22:36 UTC By default, directories are sorted by name.
However, it can be changed in Configuration - Options - Display - Like files (also by time).
If you need to change this multiple times, you may create a button in the button bar with the command cm_SwitchDirSort .
