Translation & .mnu files

Post by *sas2000 »

Hi, i've noticed that when i use shortcut
SHIFT+F1  Custom columns view menu
then Tc translates words

Brief
Full
Comments
Thumbnail view

to my language looking on  .mnu  file for commands like  cm_srcshort or cm_srclong  and getting translation from there. But  .mnu  file is usually modified and personalized by users, and it's possible that Tc do not find cm_srcshort on it (because user never use this command and deleted Brief entry from his menu) so this word will not be translated.

If it is possible i think it's better to do not use .mnu file for translations. Thank you very much.

Yes, it is always a bad idea to modify the default files.

TC has therefore a better way:
Do not modify WCMD_ESP.MNU directly!
Just use a copy of the file like WCMD_SAS_ESP.MNU and modify it to your needs.
Copy or better hardlink other language related files accordingly

You will have:

WCMD_SAS_ESP.INC (hardlink)
WCMD_SAS_ESP.LNG (hardlink)
WCMD_SAS_ESP.MNU (modified copy)

Finally set your language to your new file.

Note: Using a hardlink will keep your new language up to date after the next update!

Thanks for the answer, i do not like very much the Spanish translation of Tc, so over the years i have created modified versions of all the original files, so the files that i use are

WCMD_MOD_ESP.INC
WCMD_MOD_ESP.LNG
WCMD_MOD_ESP.MNU

But if on file WMD_MOD_ESP.MNU do not exist the line MENUITEM "REDUCIDO", cm_srcshort then when using Shift+F1 keystroke the word Brief is not translated.

Thanks again.

Same thing applies if cm_LeftShort or cm_RightShort are missing and you are in left respectively right panel.

And of course also applies to cm_LeftLong, cm_LeftThumbs, cm_LeftComments, cm_SrctLong, cm_SrcThumbs, cm_SrcComments, cm_RightThumbs, cm_RightComments and cm_RightLong.

So the only entry in the Shift+F1 menu that takes its translation from the .lng file is the 1581="Configure custom columns..." string

Sorry for bumping this old topic, but after so many years this issue remains and i must have lines that i don't need at all in my modified .mnu file to translate some words from English to my language.

IMHO .mnu files should not be used for translations. Best regards :!:
