SFTP and large files: "The plugin SFTP was unloaded by Android"

Post by *gargamon »

I use an android tablet and connect to a NAS via the SFTP plugin(SAMBA) . Everything is fine when I transfer large files from the tablet to the server, but if I try copying the other way I get an error "The plugin SFTP was unloaded by Android. Try closing other apps ... check the power saving functions of your device"
I have turned off the power saving function with no change. I also closed all apps except for TC and tried the copy. It failed, but it did get more copied before crapping out.
Any additional info I can provide or is this something we need to live with?
Thanks.

There are phones with draconian power saving functions (mostly from Chinese vendors) which kill every app which is no longer in the foreground after a short while. However, this usually affects both uploads and downloads. Do you get this in the middle of a large transfer, or also when trying small files?

The failure occurs only when transfering large files.

The device having the problems is a Samsung A7-lite tablet. I have not been able to reproduce it on my Samsung phone. An additional message I received during these tests indicated that the plugin was repeatedly stopping.

Is there a debug mode that the plugin can be run in that will show more info? If so, how do I activate it?

That sounds more like there is a crash in the plugin than the plugin being unloaded.
Do you get this only for files larger than 2 GB or 4 GB? They are two limits some servers may not be able to handle.

Files are typically less than 1 GB. It usually craps out aroung 200 MB. If all other apps are closed it appears to get more copied before it fails. I'll run some more tests to verify.

Google Play Store reports one "out of memory" error on a Samsung Galaxy Tab A (2016) in the SFTP plugin, could this be your device?

No. Its a Samsung A7-Lite. 3GB RAM, 32GB ROM, about double the Tab A specs.

Strange, there is no crash report for this device in the Play Store.

To send me crash data, you can do the following:
1. Enable development mode on the tablet by going to Android settings - About device, and then tap 7 times on "Build number".
2. Important: Restart your device to clear the debug log (it's a ring buffer in RAM, so the SFTP crash is probably long gone from the log)
3. Recreate the error
4. Go to Android settings - "System" - "Developer Options".
5. Click on "Debug report". It will collect crash data in a notification.
6. Once it's done, click on the notification and choose "Total Commander" as the target. It saves a ZIP file with debug info
7. Send me this zip file to cghisler at gmail dot com.
