Lister does not show the last line in file

Post by *al20878 »

Hi All,

I'm using TC11.03 64bit Win 10 .... Cannot see the last line in Lister. The vertical scrollbar is all the way down, but the last line is obscured by the horizontal scrollbar.

Snapshot attached.

Any ideas?

Thx

Either press the End key on your keyboard or make the Lister window a little bit higher so that you can see all lines in full. It should also work to use the scrollbar's lower arrow to scroll the rest of the way to the end.

Thanks. I tried everything (incl. the End key, and the down arrow in the scroll bar) -- the last line still remains hidden behind the horizontal scrollbar. Some lines are so long, I cannot make the Lister big enough to accommodate (can't go wider than the display), so the scrollbar is not going to go away...

It is interesting to note in your image that the cursor position (scroll bar) is displayed at 33% in the top right-hand corner,
although the scroll bar is already at the bottom.
If the scroll bar is at the bottom on my PC, then 100% is displayed.

I also had the behaviour described ONCE at the beginning of my test,
that the last line could not be reached.

This problem no longer occurred during the subsequent tests...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
F3 Lister (ulister) - [C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log]
Switch to 7 UTF-8 ...
Options:
- 7 UTF-8 0% - Start of file
- ANSI (Windows charset)
Pull the scroll bar all the way down
100% End of file
OK
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pull the scroll bar upwards until 33% is reached
Click on 33%
Enter 100
OK
Click several times on the down arrow from the scroll bar:
Line 22873: 2024-03-01 02:12:27, Info CBS Ending TrustedInstaller finalization.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pull the scroll bar upwards
Press Ctrl+End key
Line 22873: 2024-03-01 02:12:27, Info CBS Ending TrustedInstaller finalization.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ctrl+Pos1, Ctrl+End work.

I can no longer reproduce the issue... Maybe the file was active when I was looking at it, and was being written to?

Then why "End" did not work, showing more of the growing file? I have no idea...

If the file is constantly growing then the file's end Lister sees is not the end of the file anymore the moment you press the End key - because the file became larger at the same time. That's to be expected. In such cases you have to press the End key repeatedly, maybe even in (regular) intervals.

I considered mentioned that but then I saw the date in that file (couple days old) and thought that it's not that. Looks like I was wrong about that.

That's what I did -- I kept pressing all of those keys (End, PgDn, Down Arrow) and scrollbar icons, mouse wheel etc, but there was no change in Lister, no new contents shown, and the last line remained hidden as it was in the screenshot posted above...

Anyways, let's close this discussion here, and should it happen again, I'd re-post (hopefully with more/new info)...

Thanks for all your suggestions, though

Ah, sorry, I forgot to mention that one needs to press F2 to make Lister reload the file before the End key can do anything useful, at least in such cases.

Use blat.exe (like tail -f) for such files.

Did you mean some other tool? I don't see how a command line SMTP mailing tool could help here.

Yes, sorry: baretail.exe of course.

Yes, sorry: baretail.exe of course.
While I appreciate people wanting to help, "suggestions" like this are not exactly welcome because clearly it means that the person did not bother to read the thread first.

If I was aware, at the point of experiencing the situation (described in my initial post), that the file was in fact growing, my actions would have been different, from the get-go.

I still believe that in this case, Lister should have re-read the file on Ctrl-End, to advance and show more at the bottom of the window -- after all, it "knew" it was only showing 33% (and it wasn't very obvious to me, even to notice that small indication at the corner).

Should it happen again, perhaps try to toggle Wrap text (tap W twice), can't replicate it here with the same file on Win 10 as it shows the last line as it should.
