DPI setting: high resolution, scaling 150%, Font, Monitor

Post by *bishopnator »

Hello everyone, I tried first time TotalCmd with a high-resolution monitor and I get to some problems. What I did is following:
1. installed new computer (win8.1, scaling set to 150% (default), monitor resolution 3840x2160 pixels)
2. copied my totalcmd folder from old machine to the new one (previous machine had win8.1, no scaling, monitor resolution 1920x1080 pixels)

I setup bigger fonts in the totalcmd, etc. and it seemed relatively good. Then I check DPI-aware support at home page of totalcmd and installed latest version (so I upgraded from 8.01 to 8.51 version). First of all I have to say that TotalCommander claims that it has support for high resolutions (stated in news for 8.50 version). From what I see in totalcmd as I copied it from previous machine to the new machine, it is not true.

Support for DPI aware means that if you change scaling in OS, the application should remain its sizes. So the application's frame, icons and fonts should be resized automatically according to the new DPI. I see in the INI file description that it is possible to setup TotalCmd separately for different resolutions, but I would expect that application is able to adapt itself automatically. I check also forum for possible solutions and get to the following links:
(I cannot send links directly as this is my first post)

Probably I don't have any other option that to create specific section for my current resolution and setup it correctly. What possibilities do I have? I would expect in INI file just single settings - font sizes, icon sizes for DPI 96 and then TC should adjust those values automatically for current DPI. Hopw it is working?

Another problem is that it seems, that TC has still some problems with adapting to different DPI settings. I copied some files with queuing them and in the modeless dialog, the texts are displayed incorrectly. I don't see a possibility to attach a file here so I cannot show a screenshot, so just a brief description:
(ensure that scaling in OS is set to 150%)
1. copy any files (large enough to be able to at least pause the copying) (so F5 and then F2)
2. select a row in the dialog
-> bottom of text is clipped away

I have done the same steps as you with a new laptop with the same resolution and had to up the size of the button bar icons, but I have no issues.

I have a 11.6" tablet/convertible with full HD resolution, and I don't have your problems with DPI. Did you set the font size in the dialog boxes to a size larger than 10? Then you may be getting overlapping texts. Instead, you can tell TC to scale the dialog boxes even more. You can add the following line to wincmd.ini section [Configuration]
OverrideDPI=180
Try values between 150 and 200. And set the dialog box font size to 8 or 10.

This only scales the dialog boxes, not the main window!

Hello again, since my last post I switched monitors back to 1920x1080 resolutions, but now I got again new monitors with 3840x2160 and I found other problems with TotalCommander. In Win8.1 and set scaling to 200% the batch copy dialog (F5 -> F2 on the file) displays the files with proper font but the listbox makes only half of the space needed. See the screenshot (tested also with 8.52a version).

Hmm .. I still cannot use links directly :-( For figure the problem by yourself .. can you fix my account for that? I think it is pretty clear that I am not any spambot poluting this forum with garbage.

I have a high resolution as well (3840x2160 - 250%) and I get good result with almost every dialog except the internal viewer lister.
Font are very small on this viewer - no problem with other (comparing file content, sync dir, .
QuickView is also very small as it use the internal viewer.
Many Thanks

Strage, the fonts in Lister should scale automatically with DPI settings.

Anyway, try setting different fonts in Lister's configuration dialog.

Many thanks. Changing the font in the lister's configuration solves the problem. (The default font was FixedSys Size=6.)
Thanks. Philippe.

Hey,
kind of a similar problem :(

UHD monitor, scaling 150%, TC looks really ugly... Lines have big gaps. https://www.gatetv.cz/ftp/scale150%25-UHD.PNG
When I change the scaling to 200%, it's fine! But Win is unusable for normal work :? https://www.gatetv.cz/ftp/scale200%-UHD.PNG
On my other HD monitor (scaling 100%), TC is fine. https://www.gatetv.cz/ftp/scale100%-noUHD.PNG

Is there any way to fix it. Please?
I've tried almost everything...
Thank you very much.

Not sure if it helps, but try Options > Icons > Icon size > Extra space: Vertical: 0.
