Huh, scratching head and clutching at straws here. Only suggestions to try to narrow down the problem:

[1] You do have the box 'Multimedia(AVI, WAV..)' checked in Lister's config options?

[2] mp3 association looks something like this: AIFF Format Sound ("C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /Open "%L") - especially the parameters?

[3] Associate mp3s with some other player and see if that works

[4] What's the difference between your playing and non-playing systems?

[5] Use Sysinternals Filemon to track what TC was last doing before it froze if you fancy debugging your problem.

:-) sorry if I put you on overload :-)

1) Yes - I do have it ticked.

2) - I do not understand what you want me to check here - nor how. BUT if I clik on any mediafile WMP opens it.

3) I do not have other programs associated with MP3.

4) Sorry - I do not understand your question (I'm not English)

5) Sysinternals Filemon - where do I find that program? Is it built in in XP?

I'd really like my problem sorted since I often browse throug my MP3-library and used to press F3 to listen a bit of a MP3 -file when compiling a new CD for myself.

BTW, thanks for all your efforts.... Hope you haven't given up on me.

Are you sure this happens with any mp3-file ? I sometimes encountered files with the extension mp3, but with a different header inside the file (..Lame?) , which couldn't be played with F3. It just shows the code content then.
While other players still could handle the file.

Frustrating problem, eh? Something in the chain seems to be broken but we don't know exactly what.

[1] As Sam says, be certain that you aren't using a misnamed mp3 which WMP doesn't support, then stick to that file for testing.

[2] See if Lister will play music files of any other format like .wma.

[3] If it's not too much trouble, I would simply reinstall WMP. That might reset things back to square one.

[4] If not, install Irfanview, set Lister up to use that instead of WMP, and then see if that clears up the problem.

I wonder if you indeed carefully tried the suggestion of @ghisler:
start regedit and go to the following key location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\MCI Extensions

Here, add a new string value named

mp3

with contents

MPEGVideo
I would at least give another glance to this entry.

Dear sheepdog - I already have an entry here like suggested. I tried to make a new one called mp3 but regedit tells me I can not have to strings called the same.

I do not know how to attach a screenshot here on the board - so I can not show it. But I do have the string with the value...

No, but you can try that one also.

Go to Lister plugins (left on the webpage) and seek for audio file players.

He recommands to search yourself. See the upper-right corner, if you are so lazy to open your eyes.

Well, I only wanted to do it right and maybe I got confused over the sentence "Go to Lister plugins (left on the webpage)" since I could not find it on the left side.

Via the search engine I found the two links I qouted earlier and since I'm quite new on using the "lister" function in TC I only wanted to do things right - call me careful or cautios - but please not lazy :-)

I call you lazy also. This site is very obvious. Move around, click here and there, hang around more then 10 seconds (hour, two) and you will know everything and new world of options will open to you. So, please, spare as the sentence "I only wanted to do things right" because if you really wanted that, you would do it !

Hmm...

Now I have tried

http://www.totalcmd.net/plugring/AmpViewClassic.html
and
http://www.totalcmd.net/plugring/AmpViewLite.html

and only the latter works for me - and perfectly. The classic probertly don't work since I do not run WinAmp.

Thanks for all the help on sorting this out.

No offence meant. I do believe you when you tell this.

It was only a thought because sometimes human beings tend to fail.
