I think, Forward means , that archiver accelerators are not localisable for cirillic layout.
It's false :) We can switch between cyrillic and English layout. But sometimes it takes so much time :D

The English one ?

:D What about the English image ?

- Naturally, the original texts related to that proposal can't be published here, but AFAIK, nothing forbids the readers to ask for details, and forbids us to answer !

:) Hello Paul !

• Than you for that support !
- In fact, I just drew the images according to a Lefteous' request, and I hope I got him alright…
- Anyway, the present thread shows that there is a real need to redesign that dialogue, and these pictures -though not perfect- could be a good start…

:) Tss, tss… Hairsplitting

- You proposed “ideas”, but why do so if this is not to apply them then? So, for me it's a request, but nicely dressed… :P

- Seriously, the most important is to discuss that issue with more details here…

Hello, Clo, Lefteous.

Whoever of you two had the idea(s) and whoever of you two did the design details, I would like to express my support for this redesigned packing dialogue box.

Karl

I have also created a proposal, based on Lefteous' idea of a listbox and Clo's additional info area, thanks!

http://icfu.totalcmd.net/TC/Images/packer_dialog_redesign.png

1. The listbox contains extensions only, there is no difference between internal/external/plugins anymore.
2. The listbox entries can be sorted to the user's liking, so you can put your preferred packers on top.
3. There is much room for the extensions.

I hope you like it. Well, I do now. ;)

Hello, Icfu. Hello, Clo (and Co-Designer?!).

Icfu, your dialogue box looks very clear, straightforward.

Considering my limited number of packer plugins and external packers it would be definitely ok for me.

I just wonder if users with lots of packer plugins and external packers will be able to tell which kind of packer they are using.
(And remembering various threads about problems with winrar might indicate this information may be needed.)

This is what Clo's dialogue box will make users remember. You will be forced to see what kind of packer you are using.

Very likely the answer to the question which approach is more appropriate needs to be answered by using both dailogue boxes.
Will such a thing happen during alpa- and beta-testing? Two different versions of a dialogue box being tested by the (alpha/beta)testers?

I'm very surprised. It thought you dislike this idea because of the missing ability to select the packer using mnemonics.

If I understood you right, you are missing an option to differ between internal archivers, external and plugins? This could be shown below the edit box, in the info text area, like that:
Internal ZIP activated!
External RAR activated!
Plugin XYZ activated!

Additionally it could also be marked in the listbox by adding a symbol in front of the extension, like *zip for internal, $rar for external, something like that.

@Lefteous:
I'm very surprised.
Me too. :)
It thought you dislike this idea because of the missing ability to select the packer using mnemonics.
Meanwhile I think that the simple up/down navigation to reach any packer, the better visibility of the extension in a listbox and the sorting possibility can make me forget the mnemonics. Anyway, in case I need one, AHK will do the trick, of course this will not convince ghisler. ;)

So, maybe we need a mixture of both, radio buttons for internal and external like now and a listbox for the rest? On the other hand: once the focus is in the listbox you can jump by using letters, maybe that's even faster than mnemonics once you get used to it.

By now one can press Alt+F5 then Alt+- then Down, or Right arrow. And then one can use Ctrl+"First letter" to move through the list. And if I have such entries there as:

Code: Select all

tar.jar
...
tio
...
tar.bz2
I can access the first with Ctrl+T and then if I press Ctrl+T one more time I will jump to the second entry (tio).

Maybe this advice will be of value to someone here.

:) Hello !

• Press…Press… Don't think that all users are Keyboard Knights ! :P

- That I drew is designed prior for the large majority of users (and I) that use the mouse… I didn't forget hotkeys, though.
- The current dialogue sucks a lot. And not only the layout ;)

It's just a possibility. Now that I know about it I use it.

Ctrl isn't needed if current language is English. In my case if the current language is Russian then without Ctrl it doesn't work, but with - does work :D
