I would suggest to build 7-zip support in Total Commander as the default packer, since it can handle both .zip and .7z formats
That's not a very good point - RAR can handle both .zip and .rar formats, too. 7z is just "another incompatible format" and there is no reason to support it more or less than any other archiver supported by MultiArc.
True, but 7-zip can pack in .zip format better than any other packer that packs in .zip format, while still keeping a compatible format.

Not in all cases. TC very often has a better ratio using its internal ZIP packer.

Uhm. I always got better compression with 7-zip (of course it costs a lot of memory and time)

Well, when publishing my addons I always try PKware ZIP, 7-Zip, 7-Zip with three passes, TC's ZIP and RAR's ZIP and usually TC (sometimes RAR, sometimes 7-Zip) wins.

TC 6.0 will support the Deflate64(TM) unpack method, but will not create it because most packers cannot unpack it. I tried it, it only offers marginally better compression. If you want good compression, use TAR.BZ2 (with the bz2 plugin) or RAR (external packer).

Black Dog,
Well, let's see, Christian said it first, however, no proof of that exists anymore, so neither you nor Christian can claim it... so, what would you do? ;)

Sorry, RAR packing cannot be added internally, the format is NOT free.

oblomov,
Define "free". There is a "developer license" mentioned at http://www.7-zip.org/register.html . Apart from that, 7-Zip is still in beta state.
