as for "Open Mode = 2 - Open only file under cursor", do we really need that? I have not realize it's usecase yet, would you please to show it?
I was thinking of the situation where I might have manually selected a lot of non consecutive files to perform some operation on, and then find out that I have to make a quick change to one file. As it is now, I have to save the selection (to file, clipboard or memory), then deselect all the files, press F4 to edit the file, and finally load the saved selection.

It corresponds to TC's option for F3, where I can set it to only open the files under the cursor (first choice in Configuration -> Edit/View -> Viewer for F3)

Yep, that would be great.

Shanny thanks for the nice tool!

In the modify window, enter parameters surrounded by double quotes
parameters: "p1=v1"

press OK and go again to the settings menu to see that parameters is set to p1=v1 without quotes.

Now enter
parameters: ""p1=v1""

then press OK and go again to the settings menu to see that parameters has been set to "p1=v1" as intended.

This happens because of the way .ini files work on Windows, but it's confusing. Can you do something to fix it, or at least add a reminder in the options window?

Is it possible to set the menu icon?

Is it possible to start a program hidden? This is because I use edit to launch a batch file which launches another program.

Thanks again!

Bug report:

1. Make and use a Custom Columns View that only contains the two default fields: Name and Type.
2. Try to open any file (for example C:\test.txt) by pressing F4 or Esc-F4
3. F4Menu will show an error:
---------------------------
F4Menu
---------------------------
Cannot find file [chkdsk1.txtchkdsk1.txt] in Dir [C:\]

---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
This kind of behaviour does not occur if I use ChoiceEditor or OpenFileTC, or just use my texteditor directly.

I've got a suggestion to expand the use of F4Menu: I'd like to be able to use it independent of Total Commander!

Some explanation: I'd like to be able to associate certain extensions with F4Menu in the registry, so that F4Menu will handle every opening of this extension. It would be useful with certain files, such as .csv (sometimes in excel but sometimes just in plain notepad).

A further use for this, would be to let two users on a machine have two different default editors/viewers for an extension. That would probably involve saving f4menu.ini in the %APPDATA% dir. Then UserA opens .doc in MS Word while UserB opens .doc in OpenOffice.

The last example is one of my main reasons for wanting this feature. I haven't found an app to do this, but F4Menu (or ChoiceEditor or Open File TC) are the closest I've come. I can do it through scripts run on each user logon, but using a tool would be "cleaner" IMO.

Maybe a bit beyond the initial use of F4Menu, but asking doesn't hurt, huh?

It only hurts those who have been proposing and discussing this feature several times in this thread already. ;)
Shanny has expressed that he will implement exactly that two times only on the previous page.

Of course, reading this won't help you, because Shanny has disappeared for the second time half a year ago. Looks like we have to wait until his son has grown up...

Ouch!

Well, guess that's pretty good news (that I could've read myself before), now just need a bit of patience, I suppose... Good luck with your son, shanny :)

thanks for the heads up, icfu

Dear Shanny;
your tool seems excellent. I've been using another F4-solution up until today, but that one had some shortcomings.

A question for you, or anyone else on this forum: is it possible to let F4menu point to a relative path instead of an absolute?
Right now, for instance, i have specified C:\portable\mplayer\mplayer.exe as the video player for some filetypes. I would like to get rid of the C:\ though, since i sometimes run the same TC-setup on portable drives.
Could i either refer to some "current device" (C:\ in this case, but F:\ if TC is run from USB) .... or could i point to "../../portable/mplayer/mplayer.exe", using *nix terminology?

The tool is good indeed, but has IMHO one essential defect in the aspect of usability. Is it possible to change preconfigured hotkeys CapsLock+F4 and Esc+F4 (to ommit selecting dialog and run default editor) for F4+F4 (tapping F4 double)? IMHO it would be much more convenient and faster, because default keys combinations are VERY uncomfortable at smaller notebook keyboards.
Many thanks in advance!

Thanks, but it is not just the thing asked for. If one change the settings as you advise, the result is that pressing F4 will omit selecting dialog and directly open one default editor for every file, this is TC default behaviour.

What I asked for was the following option:
F4: opens F4Menu dialog
F4+F4 = Esc+F4 = CapsLock+F4: ommits F4 dialog and opens the file.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, but is all there.

There are 2 actions:
  1. Foreground mode, always show selection menu
  2. Background mode, only show if necessary
and 4 shortcuts:
  1. F4
  2. ESC+F4
  3. CapsLock+F4
  4. ESC+F4/CapsLock+F4
you just need to choose whatever you want.

Thanks again, but afraid I couldn't explain clearly what I mean, so I try again. In the current version one has to main options (regarding this aspect):
1) To assign the key F4 for Foreground mode (always show selection menu) and ESC+F4 and/or CapsLock+F4 for Background mode (only show if necessary).
2) To assign the keys contra versa.

But it seems not to be possible to assign some other hotkeys for any of thw two operations. My wish is to assign F4 for background mode and
F4+F4 (F4 twice) for foreground mode
. The fist is possible, the second is not. In the current version one has to use for one of the modes the hotkey ESC+F4 and/or CapsLock+F4, which are the both quite uncomfortable at a smaller notebook keyboard.
