Great thread to stumble across.
When I used Norton Commander in the DOS days, I used it in conjunction with a little utility called Go. You could assign nicknames to directories in a master list and the just type "go name" and you'd jump to that directory.
Much as I like Total Commander's Directory HotList and the icons in the toolbar, "Go" was a lot faster. Is there such a tool for Windows?
Also, I'm looking for a good font manager, preferably one that displays each font name in its own font, so I could get a quick glance overview of what's installed and what's not installed.

Someone posted XCD somewhere on this board, I can't find it anymore, however, so I put it temporarily to http://thehacker.host.sk/myfiles/xcd/ [EDIT: Not working, use http://ezshare.de/files-en/243616/xcd.rar.html instead]. Someone please get and host it (Maxwish, Ergo)?Much as I like Total Commander's Directory HotList and the icons in the toolbar, "Go" was a lot faster. Is there such a tool for Windows?

Hi Robert_Carlton,
as for the font manager you are looking for, I would recommend Sue Fisher's The Font Thing (http://members.ozemail.com.au/~scef/tft.html)
I am using it for a long time and it is quite handy.
About that tool go: Are you sure this won't work with TC?
Do you have a copy of this tool? I would like to have a look at it. (Is it free software?)

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.

Well, don't copy people, Raymond, if you don't know what are they talking about ('cause actually even smartest of them can do exactly the same %)...[/face]

It was public domain shareware. It ran under DOS, and also worked well in my DOS window in Windows 9x. Can't imagine it would work in the Windows environment, but, if there isn't anything like it, its functionality possibly could be built into TC.When I used Norton Commander in the DOS days, I used it in conjunction with a little utility called Go.
One of the things I used to do in setting it up was to give a directory several different nicknames, so I didn't necessarily have to remember it perfectly. Eg, I could go to E:\letters via...Program GO.EXE: By Eric Marsh -July 86
Version 1.2 update -November 1987
go l
go ltr
go ltrs
go letters
etc... you get the idea.
I'd be happy eventually to send copies, but can't even think about it for a few weeks. I'm in the midst of migrating over to a new system and need to get things up and running.
as for the font manager you are looking for, I would recommend Sue Fisher's The Font Thing
Her font lists are in Arial, same as Printers Apprentice, which is the best tool I've been able to find. HP's old FontSmart utility, which I used to use with Windows 9x, listed each font in its own face, in side by side panels of uninstalled and installed fonts, and it was easy to get an overview of what was installed and what wasn't. It doesn't look like Font Thing has been updated to XP or that there's any support for it.
I'll look at XCD. Thanks....
Perhaps this is what you were looking for: Image: http://klsgfx.kl.funpic.de/the_font_thing.jpgHer font lists are in Arial, same as Printers Apprentice....
Yes, there have not been any update for a long time now, but The Font Thing works. There are two issues though:It doesn't look like Font Thing has been updated to XP or that there's any support for it.
- I do not know, if there's any support for those colorfull WinXP themes.
- The second one is more serious: The Font Thing has to have administrative rights to work properly
http://www.ampsoft.net/utilities/FontViewer.php
http://opcion.sourceforge.net/
and this one
http://www.gesindel.de/index.php?lang=english&page=require
The last mentioned one is made with a completely different approach.
If none of those fits your needs and you find one by yourself, I would like to ask to tell me about it... I am always curious about good tools.
Klaus
Addendum: I just discovered, that The Font Thing seems to have problems with OpenType fonts. So please forget about my recommendation. I used it mainly with my old fonts collection. There weren't any OpenType fonts, so I never knew about this.
Please apologize.
