You probably have some bad audio codec installed. I suggest that you get the tool Graphedit (just search for it on the net) and drag&drop an mp3 file on it. This should show you what driver is used for mp3 files. You can then try to unregister that driver with

regsvr32.exe /u drivername

You can also try to install a driver pack containing an mp3 codec, but such driver packs can also cause other problems.

No offence taken at all - I really just wanted to post a screenshot to make sure we were talking about the same thing - or if you could tell if I was doing anything wrong.

My problem seemed to become weirder and weirder when I discovered I easyly could listen to sound files other than MP3.

But thanks to the previous advise I have now solved the problem with above mentioned plug-in.

I think it would be nice knowing what caused the problem so I have run Graphedit but can not work out what it means and I'm not even sure theres a problem.

There are four boxes saying:

1:
output
filename.mp3

2: input-audio
MPEG-I Stream splitter

3: Digital audio in - Digital audio out
Nero Digital Audio Decoder

4: Audio input pin (rendered)
Default direct sound device.


Yes, I do have nero 7.0.8.2 installed but no problem regarding Nero

This is the bad guy here! It has replaced the normal "Mpeg layer 3 decoder" coming with Windows.

Please go to the Nero directory (usually c:\program files\Ahead or so) and search for *.ax. Then list the found names here.

Well - this is odd. Almost all my program files are located on D-drive - and here I find no ax-files under Ahead, but I find a lot in c:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\

I have some other ax files under windows and under another few programs. What do I do now?

It's probably this one:
c:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter\NeAudio.ax

Go to this directory and unregister it:
regsvr32 /u NeAudio.ax

If this helped, then you are done. Otherwise re-register the filter with
regsvr32 NeAudio.ax

and try another one which might be responsible for mp3. You can see some descriptions with Alt+Enter in the property sheet. Good luck!

Hi I found that I had the same problem when selecting F3 to run an MP3 Lister opened but no audio however if you click the audio slide on Lister (which has a green top when starting) that it changes to orange and the audio is audible - hope this helps
