I just install wine/Total Commander on Fedora Core 5 because I can't find other tools that might help me transfering files over the parallel port. TC nows gives the error it can't load the port driver. Is there any solution for this, or is this just "tough, bad luck, won't work"?.

Thanks,

hvn

:) Hello !

Help¦Tutorial wrote
…To load this driver dynamically, you need administrator privileges on this machine!
If you don't have these, or want for work under a user account for security reasons (recommended), you can have the driver loaded automatically at system start. To achieve this, you or your administrator have to call Total Commander from an administrator account like this:
Totalcmd.exe /installdriver
To remove the driver, use the command:
Totalcmd.exe /removedriver
• Maybe is it the same issue ? I guess you might be logged as "root"…

I guess it's rather a case of
"tough, bad luck, won't work"
Sorry

Unfortunately, I get this result:

[root@Ladysmith Huub]# .wine/drive_c/totalcmd/TOTALCMD.EXE /installdriver

Apart from that, I've been unable to find the helptext you quoted.

:) This info is set in the Help (and the Tutorial) from the
Index page >> 3. Operations >> h. (f. in the Tutorial) Direct parallel PORT cable connexion

• The ntoskrnl.exe is alright in the path you quote here (and several other places…)
hal.dll is alright @ the demanded location here under XP-Pro
- The driver itself is located in the root of the TC-folder !

If the other computer for the parallel connection uses Windows, you can use one of the following tools to transfer files via the parallel port:

1. My port of the LPTDOS server to Linux (written in Pascal, with source):
https://plugins.ghisler.com/addons/lpt4linux.zip

2. TC_SERV, an enhanced version of LPTDOS converted to C, by user Paul Theo Pilgram:

Mr. Ghisler, Thank you for this reply. Unfortunately, with a tested cable, TC is unable to connect. The Windows side is setup via Net | PORT Connection | Client as told in the tc_serv text. It tries to connect, waits 3 seconds and starts trying to connect again until it times out. During this, tc_serv is waiting patiently and connected. Both systems (Fedora Core 5 and Windows95) only have 1 parallel port.
Do you have any idea?

Thanks,

hvn

:) With Win 95, you are not using the right driver !
- You need <CGLPT9X.VXD> !

Do I need it on Linux or Win95? Because I just checked on Win95, and it's there. I also just checked Win95 (same pc) - WinXP (via Parallel connection) using the same cable and that works.

Thank you.

:) You need it for Win 95 (and 98 - ME).

- For the Linux side, I don't know, I suppose that your Fedora OS has its own one…
… or else, use one in the two that Ch. Ghisler indicates above for Linux.

- The error log you reported above shows that you attempted to load the driver for NTFS-Windows (NT- 2K - XP).
- Indeed the requested "missing" stuff doesn't exist in Win 95 !

Usage of the drivers for the parallel port
Total Commander uses the driver cglpt9x.vxd for the parallel port connection under Windows 95 / 98.
It's loaded automatically when the connection is started, and removed at the end. …

Sorry for the delay. I've tried several times but Win95 still refuses to establish a stable connection. I will try other connection possibilities for now. Thank you Claude and Mr. Ghisler.

May some Linux user say exactly what are Tc limitations & problems using it with Wine? . Thanks.

Yes, yes, yes.
The only reason I'm not using Liunx all the time is the missing TC for linux.
All the existing liunx alternatives don't really compare to TC.

me too... file manager are very slow in linux .... TC under wine is a lot faster...

I hope in future there is a port of TC for linux ( I think there is a lot of work to do this) or in a second way to optimize TC for support running under Wine directly: for example when launch TC under wine TC recognize that and for example permit to edit permission on a file in /home/... (RWXR--R--).
For July wine release 1.0.
