Strange problem with quick search dialog

Post by *AXL »

Hi,

I'm using quick search with option letters only + search dialog and I never had any problems with it, but now I got some strange problem: when I type just one character the search dialog become filled with this charater (e.g if I type just "m" there will "mmmmmmm...mmmm" in the search dialog)
Quick search without dialog works OK.

What can be wrong?

"mmmmmmmmmmm" problem

My computer has the same problem. It may have started after the latest Microsoft hotfixes were installed. I am using Windows 2000.

I have the same problem.

Some information that may help with your troubleshooting:

It happens under Windows 2000, but not under Windows XP. I have a Microsoft Natural Pro keyboard with the Microsft IntelliType software installed.

I too used Windows update recently. These are the updates I installed around the time the problem started appearing:

Windows (KB824141) Automatic update
Windows (KB823182) Automatic update
Windows 2000 (KB826232) Automatic update
Windows 2000 (KB825119) Automatic update
Windows 2000 (KB828035) Automatic update

A workaround I use is to start the quick search dialog with no matches. E.g. use a numeric character which usually has no matches.

Same here w2k SP4.
The faulty hotfix is obviously KB824141. I just uninstalled it (inside add/remove program) and the problem is gone.
It's funny though that tc is the only prog which has problem with this hotfix. What's even stranger is that this hotfix is only inteded to correct problems inside combo and list box, but it messes with a simple input box obviously. Another well tested and designed patch by microsoft :)

I hope it would be fixed. Win2k + SP4 here too. Removal of the 824141 hotfix did it. Note that the same fix is applied for SP3 and SP4. Could that be the cause of this ?

Note that if u CTRL+ALT+letter and there is no file/directory beginning with the chosen letter, u can then type ur desired letters in peacefully.
:)
Tip for the users: use one of the numbers on top of the letters area on the keyboard (usually you do not have numbers as the first letters).
Suggestion for the programmer: to avoid this hotfix side effect, you can make a shortcut to just open the quick search pop-up window. This will only require every one to just use the quick search differently than they were used to till now. Notwithstanding, the subject must be investigated to see why it affects Windows 2K only.

That is why I prefer to come to you to try to make a suitable patch.
I'm still working w/o the 824141 hotfix applied on my computer.

Weeeell...

Maybe when 6.0 is out, Christian can take a little time to write a new plugin.
I had in mind something like "Windows for TC" *g*

That would solve several problems.
Just sort of a TC-OS to run TC to run the plugin to start a real TC...

Hi,

found something interesting to this issue:
-create a directory
-create following (empty) files:
-1
-2
-3
-4

Now try to search for 1,2,3,4
You'll get x+1 x-s in the search window, where x stands for the numbers :)

Well, I hope we save the replies to this post for the solution that may be found and not try to add more bugs to the list. This is obviously a bad hotfix, imho.

Good day,

Interestingly enough, I had the Hotfix 824141 on the Win2k Server SP4 box.

When I removed the hotfix, via add/remove facility from the control panel, the system prompted me that some programs could be impacted by the removal of the fix. The list was as follow :

1) Reverse - Superceded
- This is a program from Yamaha for their parts
2) Pegasus Imaging Corp. "The JPEG Wizard2"
3) Total Commander (Remove or Repair)

So obvioulsy, some features/options are used by these 3 programs, which lead to the situation we've experienced.

Anyhow, I don't mind so much about those little glitches, as long we find "workarounds" :) .

I've been introduced to Total Commander only but few days ago.

A friend of mine has been using this program since version 2 or 3 I believe, while he was running Windows 3.1 on a 486 SX2 66 Mhz.

Things have changed drastically since then, this is simply amazing!

Best regards.
