TC 6.01 hangs on UNC (network) drives

Post by *jvennes »

TC 6.01 seems to hang when connecting to a UNC path such as \\server\share (cd \\server\share). The timeout is anywhere from 120 seconds (first attemt) to 25 seconds (subsequent attempts)

I installed 5.51 just as a check and it also hangs in the same manner.

Start>Run>\\server\share resolves instantly.

Also, if TC is started with the default pane(s) on a UNC path, it hangs in the same manner.

This is happenning on a Win2K active directory domain with mostly Windows XP clients.

Anyone seen this behavior?

Actually, I have, and it drove me crazy. I was also getting an issue where it would take forever to copy files up to the server. My set up is a Windows XP Pro workstation and a Windows 2003 Domain Controller. I got around this issue in TC by going to the following:

Configuration -> Options -> Copy/Delete and enabled compatibility mode for \

This specifies the network neighborhood (and thus all UNC paths).

The following Microsoft KB sheds some light on this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;321169

I used that article's registry hacks until I discovered the compatibility mode in TC.

Hope this helps!

i have winxp and 6.01 ...but same problem with 2000 and old versions of TC.
however i think this solution is ok:

Configuration -> Options -> Copy/Delete and enabled compatibility mode for \

This specifies the network neighborhood (and thus all UNC paths).

i will try ... thx!

I made a very strange observation:

If I use the UNC-Path with a known folder e.g. \\MyComputer\DriveD\Programs
TC connects almost immedately.

If I switch one dir up or use \\MyComputer\DriveD\ TC seems to hang for more than 20 seconds.

Using Compatibility mode for the network solves the Prob. But I cannot understand why only the root share causes this hang.

BTW explorer doesn't hang.
