Tortoise SVN Overlay Icons Don't Display in TC

Post by *jalperin »

I'm running Vista (32 bit) with both Tortoise CVS and Tortoise SVN installed. In Tortoise CVS controlled directories, the overlay icons appear just fine, but there are no overlays showing in the Tortoise SVN controlled directories. In Explorer, the overlay icons appear properly in both T-SVN and T-CVS controlled directories. Any ideas how to resolve this? I'm running TC 7.04a. Thanks for any suggestions!

:) Hello !

• Please, check in :
Configuration Menu >> Options >> Icons
whether the box “Show overlay icons…” is ticked (it must be).

Yes it is checked (or the overlays wouldn't be showing for Tortoise CVS).

One more clue

I turned off UAC and the problem went away. When I turned UAC on again, the problem reoccurred.

Just wanted to be clear that I don't consider the problem resolved. TC doesn't show the Tortoise SVN overlay icons if Vista has UAC activated.

I've no experience with TortoiseSVN but here the overlays show only if TC is started with administrator rights. Explorer does the same, if I start it from within TC (which has admin rights) it shows the overlay icons, else it's not.

IMO a TortoiseSVN problem.
TC for Linux please!

Another clue:
If I run TC as Administrator, I do NOT see the overlays in Tortoise SVN.
If I run TC not as Administrator, I DO see the overlays.
Regardless of how I run TC, I always see Tortoise CVS overlays, and Explorer always shows them.

So, to summarize, the problem exists only when:
* Vista's UAC is ON, and
* TC is run as Administrator

just to spot it; exactly the same problem on my machine.
Please, if somebody found a fix for this, note this in this thread.

I don't really think it's an Tortoise-only related problem due to the fact the overlays are shown in explorer windows correctly...

Best,

2jalperin: No need to create a separate thread in the "TC7 bug reports forum"

If this IS a bug, the whole thread will be moved to the "TC7 bug reports forum".
If this is NO TC bug your crossposting will be moved to the "Total Commander (English)" forum.

You see: It doesn't matter if this is a bug or not you will have 2 threads with the same topic in the same forum :(

Sorry. Didn't mean to double-post. Was just trying to put the message in the correct forum. But sounds like the moderators will take care of that.

I don't use tortoise svn (but installed it once for testing purpose).

Did you check these hints given at tigris.org concerning overlay icon problems in the TortoiseSVN FAQ?

http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/faq.html#ovlnotshowing

The release notes? (enhancement for the limited 12 slots overlay icon problem):
http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/tsvn_1.5_releasenotes.html#Overlays

And the online documentation?:
Icon Overlay Settings (Figure 5.55. The Settings Dialog, Icon Overlays Page)
http://tortoisesvn.net/docs/release/TortoiseSVN_en/tsvn-dug-settings.html#tsvn-dug-settings-overlay
By default, overlay icons and context menus will appear in all open/save dialogs as well as in Windows Explorer. If you want them to appear only in Windows Explorer, check the Show overlays and context menu only in explorer box.
Kind regards,
Holger

Yes, but these suggestions don't solve the problem. It seems to be a TC problem because the overlays work perfectly EXCEPT when UAC is on and TC is being run as Administrator.

Said another way, the overlays work fine if I run Vista without UAC (which I don't want to do) or if I run TC in normal, non-Adminstrator mode (which I also don't want to do).

Maybe the option "Show overlays and context menu only in explorer" box is checked for the user "Administrator", but not for the normal user? TC doesn't have any influence on that, it just asks the system for the overlay icons...

I'm using the same user in both cases. The only difference is that in the non-working example, I run TC with the "Run this program as an Administrator" option checked in the Compatiblity tab of Totalcmd.exe. As I understand it, this allows TC to run with heightened privileges (which allows for write access to otherwise protected directories like c:\program files, c:\windows, etc.)
