I think Custom Background color for files & folders (ala OSX Finder) will be very helpful to visually manage folders with large amount of files and folders.

The
TWinKey plugin allows to set not only background color, but also background picture, depending on the directory, or global.

Your request doesn't tell us anything. Since we can already set the background colour in TC. What is it that is being customized?
Per path settings? Different colours for Folders vs Files? Different background colours for files based on extension?
Mac marketshare is < 10%, and TC doesn't run well (if at all) on Mac. "Like the Finder" - means what?
The only place I've used custom image background with TwinKey is my mp3 folders. While the feature is neat, I've yet to find any background image other than maybe a solid colour gradient that doesn't make the text harder to read.

Sorry for the lack of details, I was in a hurry.
OSX Finder allows you to set "color labels" as background to visually identify your files and folders.
Check the following page. It includes a video demonstration.

Well, that wasn't quite what I expressed my support to.
I simply just imagined the ability to set the backround color pr. file/dir just as we can already set the foreground color according to searh criterias.

I've only seen that on the Mac Desktop and only for folders.
Here's hoping there's a lot more customization in the upcoming TC 8. Fully customizable colours for Tab background/text on a per tab basis. Rounded corner background "labels" for folders.
The more customization the better, without needing to rely undocumented 3rd party hooks/hacks.

I am trying Winkey but I am a little confused here. I think it can set colors for pre-specified files/folders patterns, but can it be used to set a background color for a unique file/folder directly?

Aren't those "labels" the part of HFS+?
If yes - thanks to file system on support they are available everywhere. On Windows = they would only be visible for TC.
BTW (
from Wikipedia)
HFS+ Attributes
Color (3 bits, all other flags 1 bit), locked, custom icon, bundle, invisible, alias, system, stationery, inited, no INIT resources, shared, desktop

So how can it be done in TC?

can it be used to set a background color for a unique file/folder directly?
Of course, but not for a single file. Just specify "CAN contain c:\your\path" ("?c:\your\path" in terms of TWinKey), and when you enter this folder, the background changes to a color set by you, or to a background picture.

I was more thinking in the way what the customizable colours already do for specified file extensions, etc. But now you can only change the foreground colour and not the background colour or both...

How hard will it be to code this functionality into TC?

+1
Would be nice to have an ability to specify colors for text & background for files with different extensions
