Searching This Forum

Is there a way to search for
an expression within this forum application?
I've just tried searching for 'directory tree' but I can't seem to bind the two words together.
'directory tree'
"directory tree"
directory +tree
- don't work.
All I get is results with directory and/or tree in them.
FAQ doesn't help.
2. For that matter, is there a way to stay within a particular forum and search within THAT, without having to go and select in the dropdown the forum I've just come from?
3. Most English speakers speak only English, so can I fix in my profile or somewhere that EVERY time, I want to search English forums only?

I am not sure about the first two questions, but believe me, quite often I can see references between the English and German forums and that's helpful. Even with my limited understanding of German, translation tools available on the web are my friends
And BTW, it's fun, when some native English speakers are so sure about the superiority of their language, that they never even try to learn some other ones. I refute of course all allegations that my statement above implied that they are unable to do so

Myopic in our view we may be, Tlis, but I can assure you that VERY few English speakers speak or try to learn a second language.
Are you aware of the burgeoning English Language Training industry there is in China? As an example. Many Chinese learning Polish? German? French?
Are you suggesting that we might like to use translation websites to translate every conversation in the German forum just to see if it interests us? Riiiight..
It's a fact of life ol' son: English is the new Lingua Franca.

What do you base this statement on?

You can use a search-engine like
Google or
Bing to search through the desired pages:
Code: Select all
site:www.ghisler.ch 'directory tree'
Find out more about the
Google searchsyntax and how to
search within a specific website (site:)

Can't we just have a tick-box saying 'Search only [English] pages'?
The TC forum is unique in this regard.
If Christian were Swahili, would you want to fight your way through the Swahili answers?
Ok, Spanish...
How many main-stream English language* websites do you know of where multiple languages are returned in the forum's search results? I'm trying hard to think of another.
It's just a setting; a profile setting in Preferences. Easy.

Thanks, Stance.
Sort of works. Except the second result relates to the Android forum.
One of the next few returns a page from Help..

Same procedure as every year.
Okay. It's hard to find threads with titles like "
English Speakers Tend Not To Be Multilingual"
HolgerK wrote:Instead of suggestions like "search only for english language forum" (and a lengthy discussion about main languages), a better suggestion, not excluding multilingual users, would be to modify the forum software in a way that only selected forums should be searched:
Code: Select all
[ ] Spam trap (do not post here!)
[x] Total Commander (Deutsch)
[x] Total Commander (English)
[x] Total Commander (Français)

Phred wrote:...As an example. Many Chinese learning Polish? German? French?
I had a colleage at work, who worked for a year in China. He told me that once he went into a chinese restaurant and was reading the menu. Then, among many Chinese names he found one item named "Kotlet schabowy" (a pork chop)

. It looks that this restaurant must have had more Polish customers
I have spent 3 years in the UK and basically all my English friends either spoke or were learning some foreign languages. One of my English teammates knew French and Greek (as a student he used to spend entire summer vacation in Grece and worked there). He was also attending a course of Korean (we had a big Korean customer) and Polish (his girlfriend was Polish, and possibly me being Polish also increased his desire to learn this language). Even my neighbour, a woman on retirement, attended a class of French!
So, as you can see, my observations are somewhat different from yours. I gather people in the UK have started to recognise the need of being able to speak foreign languages, even though English is so popular ...
There you go

There you go, Holger. I'm not alone. I support that thread, too.
And I support your suggestion of the opt-in tick-boxes for languages to return to search.
Tlis, interesting, but remember, anecdote isn't data. Remember, too, that the primary language of the UN is now English. Was French.
All I'm suggesting is, like Holger's suggestion, that the forum software let the millions of English speakers out there -> opt in <- to returning other languages.
Fingers crossed.
