Configuration sync

Post by *zbuzanic »

I use totacmd on more computers and the main problem is that sometimes I'd like to sync FTP sites between them or configuration. Is something like that possible? I have many FTP sites and it's pain in the ass to manually add them.
Of course I can just copy from first PC to second but that's prone to errors. Or better to say I might have some FTP sites on second PC that are not on first.... I hope you understand... Maybe sync tool?

Hello, zbuzanic.

If what you have in mind is a function like e.g. the Firefox "Sync" function which allows you to synchronize the bookmarks, passwords, settings, history and tabs across various computers, then the answer is: sorry, such a function does not exist for Total Commander.

Keeping the configuration files of several Total Commander installations synchronized is still a manual exercise.

There is a Total Commander WIKI article which gives valuable hints on the question which configuration files should be backed up (and restored for synchronization purposes): Backup.

As you are interested in particular in synchronizing the settings stored inside the wcx_ftp.ini files, you might either copy the whole file from a master machine to the other machines, or if this is not feasible, you might use the Total Commander function of "Comparing files by content" and synchronize the content manually.

A helpful software to achieve your goal might be Ultra TC Editors. And as you are interested in synchronizing various FTP settings, the most interesting module of Ultra TC Editors might be its Configuration Editor which claims to be capable of exporting and importing any Total Commander setting.

Hi,

This is a possible solution for keeping stuff in sync: I keep a portable TC installation in my Dropbox folder, which keeps it in sync in various places. Portable means no machine dependency like registry keys or ini files in User profile folders, everything is in the TC folder. This works very well for me. Main advantage is that when I do some update for TC (like installing a new plugin or updating a plugin) the change is near-immediate available at every site.
Occasionally a sync conflict takes place (most times this is an ini file) but Dropbox never just overwrites the file but stores it mentioning it had a sync conflict. Manual merge is the solution for this.

BTW, I have the same practice for a portable tool set, which I have to update only once, instead of at several places. And everything is easily copied to an USB-stick, and immediately useable, for instance when you are at someone else's computer to help out.

Regards, EricB

Well, I know dropbox could help me but I find it unsecure. Thats why I have all important things like Totalcmd in Truecrypt volume on every machine.
Anyway, thank you for your help but I'll manually sync it. :)
