FTP client upload slower at hostgator account than WinSCP.

Post by *olesio »

Hello. I searched forum for "gator" text, but I find nothing, so I decide to ask here. I have domain olesio.eu at http://www.hostgator.com FTP account which my friend create for me on his costumer account. I got 1,5 MegaBits connection for Upload and under Total Commander when I upload my files at mentioned account I got only 50 kilobytes/s transfer speed maxumum. When I try to upload the same file under WinSCP I got above 150 kilobytes/s transfer speed. Support do not answer my friend when he asked what to do, but they probable recommand WinSCP as "better client", but like we all know WinSCP have many bugs like freezeng after canceled transfer and more. I have low FTP protocol knowledge, but like I know FTP clients do not show server something like UserAgent in Web Browsers, so how server can "detect" that I'm using Total Cmd FTP Client (instead WinSCP or other) and limit my transfer? Please explain me is it any way to bypass that limit? Now when I must transfer large files I'm using WinSCP, to do this faster, but I prefer Total Cmd. For example with account at host.sk I do not see that issues and I have maximum upload transfer in kilobytes/second. Ofcourse all transfer speed are shown by client applications which I use, but when I count time with stopwatch - under WinSCP I got better results (it upload really faster). Thanks in advice for help and sorry for my bad English.

Try a larger upload block size, the default is very small for slow connections (512 bytes):

wcx_ftp.ini
[General]
UploadBlockSize=32768

You can edit the ini via menu Commands - Change settings files directly.

WOW! That helps. Thanks a lot. Now I got 179 kb/s. I did not read wcx_ftp.ini description from long time, so I have no idea that setting exists and may help. Maybe you should place some info in FAQ or place it as bold text in help :) Once again thank you for fast answer. Now I can forgot about buggy WinSCP which always freeze after transfer cancel (even in latest version) and I must kill it process manually or by taskkill under batch file.
