PROPOSAL: Sorting directories with offset

Post by *NordicAlbino »

PROPOSAL: Sorting directories with offset

Nevertheless, I’m a very enthusiastic fan and user of the more than excellent ‘Total Commander’ for a very long time. But, even with a very good shape of knowledge of how to use all the possibilities, I’m still missing a small, but useful extra possibility: sorting directories by a given offset.

Allow me to clarify what I mean with a small example.
Let us presume that we have a directory with the following filenames which are sorted in the default order:
[face=courier]AAA0123.txt
BBB4567.txt
CCC8901.txt
DDD2345.txt
EEE6789.txt[/face]

These files are thus sorted on their first characters. But here I would like the extra possibility -- by giving a liberate value into a digital input, notably the offset -- to sort these files names on the colon of that given offset.
P.e.: By adding the offset value of ‘4’, it will give these results:
[face=courier]AAA0123.txt
DDD2345.txt
BBB3567.txt
EEE6789.txt
CCC8901.txt[/face]

I know there are many other detours (addins) which give me the same result in the end, but they‘re too complex to repeat these actions over and over again. The fabulous and excellent Rename tool is one of them, but the risk of corruption of critical data is the highest disadvantage, one that is not to be underestimated.

In my humble opinion, I think that this extra possibility is not a very great task to implement because the functionalities are already intrinsic available in TC…
But even then… it’s just a simple proposal! :wink:

Thanks in advance!

Greetings

@ Sir_SiLvA

I know, there are some plug-ins that can do such things approximately. But they are too complex in use for an over and over usage. What I suggest is a direct way integrated in de file browser himself...

Ok. That given I think I need some help. So, may I ask you what precisely add-in you recommend that does (or can do) these actions that I want?

It has to be direct and surely without too many manipulations because the action must be repeated over and over again, each time with a different offset value...

Thanks in advance!

Offset made easy

Post by *nsp »

Offset made easy.
As it is a dedicated usage, you can achieve it using this : (Quick access by R-Click on header line of file list.

use a custom view with a new column named "Sorting" and put inside [=tc.fullname:4-]

You will get an offset of 4 letters removed. But this will not work inside archive (Why tc.name tc.fullname, ext not working ???). And you will lose the sorting if you switch to another view.

So if you want be more ambitious ans ask for a sorting expression in the suggestion board.

And most of the plug-in are well integrated specially tc one...
( but to be honest, custom view is not so flexible as it should be)

I can certainly see the benifit of this proposal. Doing it with Custom columns is not really an option, because you would need separate custom column sets for each offset.

But as nsp writes - this it not the right subforum - it should be put in the TC suggestions (English) section.

Petermad, I was no explicit enough. The idea is to add on each custom view you need dedicated sorting only one "sorting column" you edit each time you need it. But as you state it not flexible enough, you can not mix sorting order using only one column, this option inside archive is not possible...

I use frequently TC as a data (from file) browser and i miss a lot the flexibility of SQL query.

Moderator message

Christian Ghisler recently stated (on the private Moderator board) that it's OK to put suggestions in the main English forum. The suggestions forum was originally meant for suggestions during the beta test. Christian has proposed that he could remove the suggestions forum and move the threads to the English forum.

Further discussion about this please in a new thread.

My sample content plugin contains a field to cut the name at the beginning, called "CutNameStart".

To cut the first 3 characters for sorting, create a custom column with the field:
[=filesys.CutNameStart.3]

and then sort by that column. You can make the colmn very narrow since it's only used for sorting.

You can download the plugin here (32+64 bit):
