Copy Operation to Duplicate Folders/Files

Post by *J-D-H »

Hello All-

I would like to use Total Commander to copy a folder and file structure to another location on my system, basically serving as backup function. The problem with using conventional techniques to do this is always the same -- if any files have been renamed in the source location, the destination will usually wind up with old file names as well as new ones. So I have looked at the list of internal commands available within Total Commander, but I could not find one that will do a "cloning" operation like I describe. Did I miss seeing this? If not, can it be done in some other way? Can such a tool be added? Thanks for any help with this......!

Detecting duplicate files is not trivial.
Therefore it can not be done during copy process.

Nevertheless you can detect duplicate files at the backup location.
Just use the search function "Commands - Search" for this purpose.
=> on Advanced tab tick option "Find duplicate files" and select the according attributes.

If your intention is to not keep old files in the backup that has been renamed or deleted in the source, then you can use the Synchronization Tool (Commands -> Synchronize Dirs... or command cm_FileSync) and use it in Assymetric mode.

I just read the help section for this function and as you suggest, the Asymmetric mode looks like exactly what I want, Thanks for this tip -- I will experiment with this today!

Hello- The Sync tool suggested by "Petermad" seems like it ought to do exactly what I want.
