Suggestion for a faster search

Post by *pisoir »

I have one "intriguing" question. I came across this fact when I tried to search for big files on my disk. I admit that I don't know how the search is implemented in TC, but probably this idea could improve the speed in some cases.
For example if I try to find a file on my disks that is e.g. > 1GB, total commander goes through all the folders and tries to find such files. However, it goes even to folders which by size are smaller than 1GB so it is clear that such a file cannot be inside such folder.
Wouldn't it be better in such cases to first check for the folder size and only if the folder is bigger than the searched file size, then I go inside the folder and try to look for files in there.
Same could be done if I search for files based on the date etc.
If it is already implemented like that, I apologize in advance.

That's a cunning plan! :) It's just that to determine folder size, you need to go inside and add up the sizes of all contained files.

Ok. My bad. I thought that the size of a folder can be obtained directly without scanning all the files and counting them (like it is stored in some table somewhere in NTFS or I don't know).
