copy/move on remote server between directories?

Is it possible to copy/move files between folders and/or subdomains on the same server without having to down- and up-load them, using Total Commander? I tried it with two connections (in two windows) to the directories I had selected, but it appeared to get stuck (it simply stopped) in the middle of it (at "STOR.....") and stays there until the connection times out. Was it my mistake, or is that not possible? I have asked the server admin and was told that it should be possible from the server's side and suggested to use Cute-FTP.
